I have an Asus U6S-X1, which I bought from BB weeks ago. It's a downgrade edition of U6S-A1 and the processor is T7250 2.0GHz 2MB L2 Cache, and of course 65nm one. The chipset is Intel 965.

I looked up the customize webpages for Dell, hp and lenovo and found that the 65nm processors and the new 45nm ones like T8100 T9300 are customizable for the same models with the same motherboards. I'm not sure if my guess is correct but I have an impression that the old Santa Rosa chipset may support 45nm Penryn and my motherboard of the Asus U6S-X1 may support T9300--the 2.5G 6M L2 cache and at the price of $350 or so.

Could anyone comfirm my guess or breaks my daydream? Thanks a million!

Yes, you can. It uses the same socket. I hope you're happy.

    I appreciate it!

Do you know if I should change something or even flash BIOS or whatever settings needed?

Maybe a dummy question: weather or not a processor is compatible with a motherboard is all determined by the socket, so long as the socket is consistent, they'll fit, right?

Assuming you have a santa rosa Socket-P, it will work with the T9300

HP's like mine needed a BIOS update to support the latest penryns. Never updated though since i dont need it

I've always been told that you can't change a processor unless you just change the whole motherboard. Is that not true? You can change just the processors?

A new mobo will be needed if the sockets are not compatible but in this case the sockets are compatible.

Assuming CPU is PGA not BGA (most are not BGA) CPU should plug right in no problem. Now getting to the CPU on some is harder on some than others but patience and caution you should be fine.

So a T9300 might be a plug in on my T7400 Alienware M5750. If true that changes my upgrade plans

No, the T7400 is not on the Santa Rosa platform, you can only upgrade to a T7600 (unless you buy a new motherboard for your M5750).

This is good news. I had hoped it would work out this way. Yes, I have Santa Rosa. :)

Does anyone know where this series will max out?

This current one is the last one. When Montevina comes out, it'll have a completely new socket.

You might want to double check that the BIOS on your U6S-X1 is 100%Penryn ready. This could be the old $340 question. Anyone in the Asus forum tried it?
