    Hello everyone,

I recently installed an SSD which gave my laptop a huge boost, but it would be great if I could upgrade my GPU as well. I read something about MXM, so I was wondering if my laptop had that, if I could upgrade my GPU and if so, how.

    Laptop specifications:
    - Medion Akoya P6816-MD99040
    - Nvidia Geforce GT 650M.

    Kind Regards,
    Mitchell

Probably not, most don't and yours is like German or something so I had trouble finding anything specific, but it doesn't seem likely as it's usually higher end notebooks that have them. I could tell if you could post a screenshot of what it looked like opened up in the back or something, but it probably doesn't have it.

I actually don't think there has even been a MXM version of the GT 650m, so it's a most likely no on the GPU upgrade.

It's kinda ****ed up that laptops still aren't upgradeable. Anyway, here is a picture of my laptop, opened on it's back.

By the way, do you know what I could fit into the empty space in the down left corner? It looks like something is supposed to go there, but was never placed. Pretty strange if you ask me.

Looks to be a full length PCI mini express. You would need to check the documentation but it could be used for a few different things like a msata etc..

With that notebook, not a chance. Most laptops GPUs are soldered on the motherboard. Only a few high end laptops can have their GPUs upgraded. Sadly you would have to buy a new laptop with a better gpu

Thanks for the pic, there is no MXM module present there unfortunately, and yeah the guy above me was right I don't think there ever an MXM 650m. It would look like a rectangular board that separately plugs into the motherboard.

    Not really accurate.
My Acer laptop (in the signature) is mid-range, 6 years and 7 months old.
It has an MXM II slot which can accept other GPU's that support it (I upgrade the GPU to 240M before, but I received the 240M with apparently faulty VRAM - this issue seems to be pervasive on this series of Nvidia GPU's so I had to return my previous GPU into the laptoop).

It really depends from one manufacturer to the other, but this particular laptop's GPU (as pictured in the third post), does NOT seem to be upgradeable - it seems to be part of the motherboard entirely.

Obviously he's referring to current stuff. Nowadays only some high-end Clevo cards are MXM, everything else is BGA.

Agree with TANWare, It looks to me that the space you are talking about, its for a msata SSD.

Which is fiddly, often difficult to make work correctly. And makes the whole rig clumsy as a desktop PC. Which is a better solution at home anyway.
