    Pentium Dual-Core T2370
    1.73 GHz
    L2 Cache: 1 MB
    FSB: 533 MHz
    Multiplier: 13x

    Voltage: 1.075–1.175 V
    TDP: 35 W
    Socket: Socket P* / PPGA478
    0.65nm
    Chipset: ICH-8M (I think)

    Core 2 Duo P8400
    2.27GHz
    L2 Cache: 3MB
    FSB: 1066 MHz
    Multiplier: 8.5x

    Voltage: 1.00–1.250 V
    TDP: 25 W
    Socket: Socket P* / BGA479, PGA478
    0.45nm
    Chipset: not sure

The bits in bold are the bits I'm not sure about

*Wikipedia says Socket P, and CPU-Z (for the T2370) says Socket P (478)

    Thanks

What Northbridge chipset do you have? If you have a 45G/PM you can. Anything else, you can't.

    ICH8M is the Southbridge.

thanks for the reply. I have the GL960

looks like it only supports 533 FSB too :(

ARK | Mobile Intel® GL960 Express Chipset (Intel® 82GL960 Graphics and Memory Controller)

edit: although I just found a site saying it supports up to a 9500

    http://www.cpu-upgrade.com/mb-Intel_(chipsets)/GL960_Express.html

I also checked my BIOS and it's version 1.5 (Insyde) which was released in 08, a year after Penryn 0.45nm so that should be OK too?

GL960 officially only supports up to 533MHz FSB Socket P processors. Oftentimes they will unofficially support 667MHz and 800MHz Merom/Penryn chips, but it varies from manufacturer to manufacturer and laptop to laptop and it's never a guarantee. You'll basically never know until you try or until someone else has tried. The P8400 is still definitely out of the question, though.

From another thread (by you actually, lol)

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/har...tel-mobile-processor-compatibility-guide.html

On the list you have a load of Txxxx CPUs which are 0.65, does this mean there is no chance of 0.45 CPUs working (Pxxxx)? I would prefer one of the 45nm chips as they should run cooler (and my CPU gets hot as well as jerky video playback)

Hopefully this will be resolved when I replace the CPU though as I will clean the fan/heatsink anyway

There is no chance of a 1066MHz FSB Penryn working (ie P8400). The 800MHz FSB Penryns may work depending on your manufacturer and model as stated.

thanks for the help (and that guide)

Think I will try the Core 2 Duo T6400 (only $9 on ebay)

Only 2 GHz but it should be fine with video playback, and with it being 45nm and newer technology overall do you think it might run cooler, even though TDP is the same?

    Thanks again

It should run cooler, since the T6400 is a 45nm part and your Pentium T2370 is a 65nm. Granted, the T6400 has a higher clockspeed and more cache - so it might end up producing the same amount of heat depending on the load.
See what a T8300 is going for. As always, compatibility is not guaranteed.

The 8300s are going for quite a bit more. I only wanted something really cheap, but that will still offer an improvement. I'm gonna take it apart to clean the fan/heatsink anyway so I just wanted to see if upgrading the CPU was possible.

Maybe if this works I will see if I can upgrade my i3 to an i5 on my other laptop

T8300 is a mid spec 800 FSB Penryn Core 2, they can be had on eBay for like 20-40 dollars. But again the biggest problem isn't the chipset but how each manufacturer has locked their bios in terms of upgrades. T6400 "should" work but again with chipsets like the GL940/960 you are rolling the dice.
