Today I was asking friend about upgrading my computer and mainly I want to upgrade my RAM but he said that I don't need to upgrade my RAM since I have Windows Vista. He told me to buy a 2gig memory stick plug it it and click on options to bring a list in which it should say something like "Use as System...."I cant remember exactly but I would really like to know if this is true and if so would it work on a laptop as well???

He's probably talking about ReadyBoost
ReadyBoost will never suffice for not having enough RAM
Take the money that you'd spend on a memory stick, and spend it on RAM. RAM is very cheap these days, so you'll get a lot of it for the cost of a 2GB memory stick. -
I agree with ace; readyboost can increase performance, but not nearly as much as actual ram will.
-
But if I get more RAM and a memory stick it will still increase my performance?
-
The memory stick thing is only really useful for computers that are so old they cannot have more RAM added to them. In modern PCs, just adding more RAM is sufficient.
Save your money and just get the RAM. The stick is not going to help you once you add that RAM, and the RAM will be FAR more beneficial to you. -
Same advice here; Readyboost is meant to supplement computers low on RAM. But, with prices the way they are, it is more worthwhile to just buy the RAM.
-
I third the motion...get more ram. After you have 2+gb ram, you wont notice a difference with readyboost (the usb drive).
-
Yup, fourth. Get more RAM!
-
Ram and ReadyBoost =D
-
OK then I will get more RAM and possibly a new gfx card, I saw a 8600gt 256mg for £100 and 2 PNY DIMM PC2-5300 DDR2 1GB DESKTOP MEMORY for £30 each so I might do an upgrade. But idk if those components are compatible with my system and I have never upgraded a pc before, is it hard ???
-
Is this a desktop or a laptop??????????
-
Its a Desktop --
Itel pentuim 4 (3gh)
512 RAM
FX 5500
160gig HDD
Windows pro
You see why I need to Upgrade -
Buy a laptop, then come here and ask for help
-
Check your motherboard manual for what types of components it will accept.
-
OP, your older desktop computer may have older DDR ram which cost more then DDR2. If this is the case, don't bother wasting any money on any upgrades on that. Use it until you feel need for major upgrade then buy a newer system then. -
and chances are it supports the older agp gpu's. which is obsolete technology.
-
If it's a notebook, there isn't a chance of upgrading the graphic card, unless you have a Clevo, Sager, Alienware, and SOME Dell's. The parts you are looking at are desktop parts.
EDIT- in the time I was posting... you guys made like... 8 posts. -
and no, its not a notebook. have a read of the other posts. -
Get the RAM if you can find it at a reasonable cost.

And for some reason page 2 ended with the top post for me. It didn't load the rest until I posted, then it showed the rest. So before getting high and mighty, realize that I made a mistake, and edited to correct. Just figured I would leave the original post, instead of typing "Deleted".
Can I use flash memory in place of RAM in Vista?
