I'm trying to help a friend to upgrade his Celeron based advent 7109b laptop. Knowing that the chipset is Intel 940GML can his laptop be upgraded to a Core Duo?

If not would a Core Solo work? and is Core Solo better than a Celeron M power wise?

What the fasted Celeron M that can be used with the 940GML chipse?

    Thanks :)

You cannot use a Core Solo with a 940 chipset. You can use Core Solo up through the T1600 and Celeron M up through the 530. Those should be the fastest Core Solo and Celeron M for the 940, respectively.

    Thanks Commander

I've just found an intersting thing, this laptop is a uniwill L51II9 laptop at the base. the latest bios version available in their website for this laptop seems to support merom.

I think I'll try the bios upgrade. if it doesn't work I use a faster celeron :)

Well, the Celeron M 530 is merom, so you could just be getting support for that... I've never heard of a 940 machine taking a dual-core chip, but I'd be interested to know if it works. What're you using to detect your chipset?

    me too

The release note for the latest bios shows amongst other stuff that they added support Yonah TJ85(T2050) CPU and Merom(T7200) CPU :)

The chipset is showing as 940/945

Yeah see, sometimes 943 and 945 chipsets will show up as 940-slash-whatever. You may very well have a 943 or 945 if your BIOS claims T2050 and T7200 support...

Then again, everything on Google points to a 940, so who knows :p

that's right... anyways I'll give it a go a see. Pentium duo core(s) or Core Duo such the t2300 are not very expensive.

You can try out the Core Duo, or remove the heatsink, and read the code printed on the chipset die with a flashlight. If its the i940GML, then the best CPU than can go in is the T1350, provided the BIOS supports it.

    Hi guys
I checked by opening this Advent laptop and the chipset is the i940GML :(. I did the bios upgrade and for some reason windows didn't like it. I had to reactivate windows :(.

It's a bit odd though. I mean what's the point of making a bios upgrade to support Core 2 Duos such the T5200 and the T7200 if the chipset doesn't support them.

Could it be that Uniwill have made a new mobo which is exactly like the one in this advent laptop but using the i945 or i955 chipset? hence why I was able to update the bios
