Not something I am looking to do right away but I would like to upgrade my HD. I have a HP8339 with dual 100G 5400rpm IDE drives and I was wondering if it was possible to switch to SATA? I read on another forum that there is not much of a difference between the two when it comes to notebooks. If I can not upgrade is it worth buying 7200rpm IDE drives? Will I see a huge diference in speed?
Thanks

No, HD interface is integrated on motherboard. You can't change anything. ATA and SATA on laptop are not that different. Besides, ATA is much cheaper now.

No, you can't switch it to SATA. You'd basically have to replace your motherboard. Can you plug a USB cable into an ethernet port and expect it to work? Can you replace your built-in ethernet port? Even harder to do so with a hard drive interface.
That said, they're pretty much negligible difference in speed. A 7200RPM IDE drive will perform almost identically to a 7200RPM SATA drive. -
Notebook hard drives cannot utilise the full bandwidth of SATA or PATA (IDE) so don't worry about it. They will be equally fast...
If you want one of the fastest drive for your specific interface (ide) have a look here:

Going from a 5,400 to a 7,200 rpm drive should give you a good performance increase though.

Going with a faster drive and possibly more cache will help too.
Can an IDE laptop be converted to SATA?
