I have just bought the laptop but Im looking to upgrade to something a little more powerful. I was hoping to update the processor but I have no clue as to what will fit.

I took the cpu out and opened a cpuid id window as below.

Im looking to move up to a T7xxx type cpu at a max of 2.0ghz 800mhz fsb and 4mb cache.

Seen a couple of t7300's on ebay but the pin layouts on the bottom dont seem to match mine / my socket...

any ideas of a cpu with the specs that will fit

I thought the T5500 used Socket M like the T7200 and not Socket P like the T7300.

Maybe CPU-Z is wrong for your CPU and it is socket M. would expalain why it looks different to what you saw on ebay.

The T5500 is a Socket M processor, so you could upgrade to the Core 2 Duo T5600 (1.83 ghz, 2 mb cache), T7200 (2 ghz, 4 MB cache), T7400 (2.16 ghz, 4 mb cache), and T7600 (2.33 ghz, 4 mb cache)... I would suggest the T7200.

    The T5450 is a low-end Socket P processor with the same specs as the T5500, but can be upgraded to the T7100 (1.8 ghz, 2MB cache, 800 FSB), T7250 (2 ghz, 2MB cache, 800 FSB), T7300 (2 ghz, 4MB cache, 800 FSB), T7500 (2.2 ghz, 4MB cache, 800 FSB), and T7700 (2.4 ghz, 4MB cache, 800 FSB)....,I would suggest the T7300.

T7200 will be virtually the same performance(as socket p), its 4mb cache and 667mhz fsb, your only missing out on the faster fsb, which really doesn't make that much difference. The T7200 will be a noticable upgrade from what you have.

There is not much difference between the T7300 and T7200 so dont worry about that. Only the FSB changed from 667mhz to 800mhz and that resulted in a slight increase in performance (around 10% depending on benchmark).

Here are some more pics I have taken of the socket and cpu. Now im totally confused. The cpu says T5450 but seems to physically fit the description of a socket M cpu from looking at it.
Then when I look on eBay for T7200's that are socket M they dont seem to match my pin layout wtf?

Any ideas what I definitely have?

Intel doesn't seem to have the T5450 on their site.

Wikipedia list the T5450 as being socket P.

What laptop is this? What chipset does it have?

This info is off the packard bell website for specifications of my laptop. Even there they say merom socket P. eh? I dont get it lol. Can I have a merom in a socket p?

    Maximum temperature 85°C

These are the motherboard specifications off the same website. Strange how it says it supports 667/800mhz fsb? Thats socket p right? So why does my socket look like socket M?

    I HAVE YOUR ANSWER.

Who cares what site says what, and what physically matches what...

Your CPU SAYS 5450 on it. Sooo it's PROBABLY a T5450. Well looking up your product number, the last number specifically (SLA4F), I have confirmed you have a T5450.

I'm 99.99% sure, since I'll never actually be 100% sure...

You have a socket P processor. I suggest the T7300.

Have fun! Rep points anyone? eh? ehh? LOL jk jk jk, seriously, jk!

Sorry not the product number it's the S-SPEC number.

It proves you have an Intel Core 2 Duo T5450.

The T5450 is listed by Intel here.

Try using CPU-Z version 1.40.5. It tells me my T7300 is a T7300 in both the name and specification fields. CPU-Z 1.42 has a known bug with the FSB speed and may have other bugs.

I'm also looking for an similar (t5500->t7400) CPU upgrade yet @ my manufacturer site's forum, they answered:

    So I'd like to ask to ukbilleh;
What is the result? Can you make it work? Does BIOS cause any problems? Does above situtations create any problems at all for you?

    Thanks...

When i purchased my E1505 i bought it with a t5500 (i never had a problem with that cpu) i loved then i upgraded to a t7400 (bought it from dell) damn lappy run application like nothing else. i gave it to my wife so she could do her images in photoshop and illustrator and it work like nothing else i haven't seen. I would recommend it any t7**** socket M are good. and like everyone said the Socket P is not that much of a different look at the price a T7600 is still in the $600 range (ha!) talk about perfomance.

Well I finally got my new cpu and dropped it in asap lol :D

All good and everything running well. Not really noticing much of a difference in the games tho. They still seem to run a little slow but maybe my expectations were a little high.

I have also ordered a 2gb stick of 667mhz to replace a 1 gb stick i currently have bringing me up to 3gb which is the sweet spot from what I hear.

After that Ill be ordering a hitachi 7k200 if I can find a cheap one anywhere to improve the loading times as I really notice the difference between 5400rpm and 7200.

Although I say there was no real difference with the cpu change there was a little but nothing mind blowing. I think the games im trying to play (crysis & ut3) are a little more graphically intensive.

Will update when I get the 3gb if that makes more of a difference as I hope it should stop some of the stuttering but if not it'll be down to getting a 7k200 when I have the funds or if a cheap one comes about.

Also in answer to nbfan question.

I ended up ringing packard bell 08705 133 332 for anyone who doesnt have the number and just asked them what my laptop could take. They were quite helpful stating I could use a maximum of a T7700, no internal bt module could be installed, no tv tuner, the bios would handle a T7700 no probs and gave me a little cheat method to save my os to an dvd and reinstall it like a recovery to a new hard disk .

    Happy days

CPU-Z has a bit of a problem recognising the newer Merom-2M mobile C2D's, It see's your chip runs at 1667Mhz and therefore thinks its the older Merom based T5500 and shows it as such.

Its the same with my 'Pentium Dual-Core T2330' CPU-Z shows it as a 'Core 2 Duo T5200' as they run at the same frequency 1600Mhz.

Wow this is a good thread, I am new at this(forum thingy). But I must say I was facing the same issue T5450--->T7300 upgrade and the CPU z results for me where exactly the same. But then I figured it out that it was a socket P through researching on net.
This thread confirmed it 4 me.
    Thank you!

Why not look at the Penryns? T9300 or T9500 if you have money to drop on a T7700. Santa Rosa's with the proper BIOS will run Penryn processors.

    Niksoftarg,
I'm in the same boat as you. I've got the same HP with a 5450 and I'm looking to upgrade to a t8300 or t9300. Will be doing some video editing, so 9300 might be better. Pricewatch shows its about $85 more. Most say the sweet spot is the 8300, though. Might do that, put the 85 towards a new 7200 HD.

Hi stewsir, your right, the T8300 seens like a sweet deal, what I´m scared about is that the T5450 has a FSB of 667mhz and the T7700,T8300,T9300 have an 800mhz bus, I wonder if the motherboard of the HP DV9700 can handle the 800mhz FSB....

Ok, maybe I'm waaayyy off here...but, don't these MBs have bus speed of up to 1600 or something like that? i was concerned about that, too, but it seems that it is a common upgrade from the 2450 to one of those. If it works, my next upgrade will be faster memory...can now put in the 800mhz stuff.

Now, if I could only upgrade the graphics from the 8600 with 512......

    Hey...thanks for the inquirey.

It was touch and go for a bit. HP puts the processors at the very bottom of the "stack", meaning I had to take the thing completely apart, including the panel, keyboard, audio, usb ports....everything. The easiest thing about the process was putting int he cpu. turned the screw, the 5450 lifted right out, the 8300 popped right in. I put it back together in about 2 hours. It wouldn't turn on, though. power up for a bout 3 seconds, then just shut off. started to disassemble it again to figure it out. I was freakin depressed..it had taken so long and I have 4 extra screws...go figure...but I only got as far as the keyboard...4th step, and the keyboard wire was unplugged. system has a failsafe that autoshuts down, apparently. plugged it it, started it right up.

Not tooo meaningful but my vista CPU and core memory scores went up 20-25%. noticeably different on certain programs, bootups/shutdowns. I also got crazy and put in a 7200rpm hd as one of the two in the system. between the two of them, the vista score is 5.4, I think. It was 4.5.

all in all, it was a good upgrade.

Let me know if you do. I'll be more than happy to help and walk you through it. the guides given by HP aren't completely accurate, so....well....there were actually 5 extra screws. :)

highly recommended. My HP is a refurbished and I just bought a 2 year extended warranty after finding out the HP will cover stuff even though I opened it.
