Checkout QNAP or Synology. Drobo is good too, but expensive by comparison.

here is a great website that has great information about the available solutions out there.
    NAS Section - SmallNetBuilder

I personally own a Synology ds209, and love it. The web interface is great, it has excellent performance and endless customization, the community is very active on the Synology forums, and the Linux backend enables scripting. I have it running a http/ftp server, bittorrent client, UPnP server (for streaming video to my PS3s), print server, itunes server, backup manager, and a ton of other things. Its awesome.

Here is my setup. 2x500GB in RAID-1 (Mirrored) in the ds209 chassis, and 4x1TB drives in a 4bay HD enclosure connected to the ds209 by USB2.0. All of that is connected to the network via gigabit ethernet. Other than when the 4x1TB drives spin down due to inactivty (you can disable that feature) the system is quite snappy.

When i get my sandy bridge lappie, im prolly gonna get a smaller SSD instead of a HDD simply because my NAS has soo much space and is very fast, so all of my media can go on that while apps and games go on my SSD. Everything else can be streamed via my home network or the internet via one of my many servers. w00t!

I too have worked with Synology and they are great. If you're looking for something cheap, I am currently using a D-Link DNS321 and it works good, but nowhere near the transfer rates of the Synology devices I've used.
