Can anyone recommend me a good 500GB or larger 7200RPM Hard Drive?

    Hello,

I'm pretty sure that the Seagate in my G73JH is failing, so what's the best hard drive to buy right now, price/performance ratio wise? I need to keep the price under $120 AUD, so that means no Momentus XT or any other hybrid drive, unless I happen to find a particularly good deal. Anything above 500GB is fine. 320GB is passable, but ideally I'd like a little more space, since D is typically my Steam drive.

    Thanks in advance.

    +1! That's the fastest 7200 out there :)

Also: Do NOT buy Seagate 7200 RPM. Mine might have been just a bad exemplar, but my laptop... scratch that - my DESK was vibrating as if I had a washing machine on top!! Couldn't stand it and got rid of it 3 weeks later!

The 640 GB 7200 RPM Samsung MP4 HM640JJ is an excellent performer as well, although I have no idea what Australian prices on it are like.

I'll second both the Hitachi 7k500 and the Samsung HM640JJ. I've owned both and was perfectly satisfied with them.

Fairly decent, it seems. The same price as the 7K500, around $70 - $80. Considering the larger capacity, I might opt for that one.

Basically take your pick. I got the Seagate 750GB 7200RPM and couldn't be happier.

no you have the seagate one

    There isnt a samsung one

Top of the line for a 9.5 mm hd is the wd 760 gb 7200 rpm drive.

The bang for your buck is the samsung 640 7200 rpm one when its on sale.

the hitachi 7k5 is the best when its not on sale.

Ive got a momentus xt and a hitachi 7k5 and Im happy with both. I think the xt is overpriced. i think it should cost about 85 usd I think its worth about 20$ more than a 7k500

I definitely like the hitachis lower temperature.

I blame the cold meds. It is seagate.

In either case it's splitting hairs. Buy the one that's most affordable.

I have been using the Hitachi 7K500 for over a year and it has been awesome. Good performance + no audible noise.

I am planning to upgrade to Hitachi 7K750 once it is out.

Is this Hitachi better than the Scorpio Black 500GB? That´s good to hear.

depending on what you mean by better. I have the black and another 7k320 in another machine. I wish I bought the 7k500 instead as I don't like the noise and vibration of the black, comparing with the 7k320.

the black is supposed to be faster at handling random access pattern but for a notebook, I care more about the thing like noise etc.

I´m looking for something fast and quiet to use it as a second drive, the main one will be a SSD.

I´m using a Seagate 5400rpm now and it is horrible.

to me the black is not quiet enough and since it is your secondary, throughput which I heard has been very good for 7k500 is more important than IOPS.

The WD Scorpio Black 500 has a 5 yrs warranty while Hitachi only offers 3 yrs on their product that's almost double.

If the Hitachi is quieter then it´s enough for me.

cant understand why people are saying this brand is good and this brand is not. It's not about brand, its about particular model.

here: I had a Seagate 100GB 7200 that was making clicking noises, had the feeling that it will fail and so I returned it. Then next Seagate 160GB and the current 500GB in my laptop have been perfect, very quiet and power efficient.

I have a Hitachi 100GB 7200 that is crazy noisy and uses more power to operate, heats up somewhat more. I also have a Hitachi 500GB 5400 drive that I've red many complains about failing within short period of time, mine still works fine though. Now I hear the 500GB 7k5 is pretty good and runs cooler.

see my point ... Ford Explorer is piece of crap, unlike Ford F150 (thought I dont like both)

.. to the OP: sounds like you need to see what's on sale at the time you decided to buy.

Quite frankly, with the pace of HDD development, I find the extra 2 years of warranty to be almost irrelevant these days. In 3-4 years, you'll be able to buy a drive of at least double the size for less money, barring incompatibilities like format changes.

    Second that ^^^.

HDDs are not crazy expensive devices. I have never used the same HDD for more than 2 years. Therefore 3 years vs. 5 years of warranties are practically the same for most users.
