    I would go to www.newegg.com .
I would stick to Corsair and Kingston...I know those are good. You will pay more for them, but they the best I have seen so far. Newegg will save you some money over buying it in a store.

I wouldn't go with top brand then...cause even high end brands can have compatibility issues with specific laptops.

You need to search for your exact laptop on google or this site's Dell section and see what exact chips other owners have had success with.

The odds of it "corrupting your data" is slim to none...most likely if there's an issue it'll either not work(errors on boot or not boot) or cause lots of exception errors/memory read errors(resulting in lockups...but data corruption is highly unlikely).

There's no correlation between cheaper chips having more issues than more expensive chips. With desktops, buying name brand can be beneficial cause often those chips are able to be overclocked more...but since most people don't do that on laptops(cause most laptops won't let you), then it doesn't matter.

It's all about that particular unit's compatibility. I bought the 2nd cheapest newegg.com offered for my system because I'd seen several posts by other owners that they had used that specific memory with success on the same system.

You already have 1GB of ram, using BOTH ram slots. In order to upgrade to 2GB you need to ditch ALL the ram you have now and to replace it with twi 1GB sticks.

Since that is the case.... theres no reason to buy 101% compadible ram. Just buy the correct ram and the cheapest kind of newegg.

How so? There are plenty of other brand names out there that are just as reliable.

Hatss...search the Dell forum for specific memory recommendations. Find a specific type that a few can recommend works and buy the cheapest one. Spending money is fine, but wasting it is ridiculous. If people say a particular one works, then that's fine.

As for the poster who said to just get some that's compatible....it'll probably work, but if you want to be sure, search the Dell forum of this site for confirmed working RAM modules.

    That's your best bet.

I've always liked Crucial because they ship quickly and respond quickly to any questions or problems.

As far as I know, almost all RAM comes from only a handful of factories and like disc media and batteries, the same brand doesn't always source from the same factories. We could argue about which company has the best quality standards or procedures that prevent problems and we could imagine that some companies who boast a higher line may do some additional weeding out, but for the most part... RAM is RAM and you're better off paying attention to the service, support and cost. ... Just my opinion and all that.

I like Crucial better. But Corsair was cheaper in this case, so I got Corsair.

For my desktop Crucial was cheaper so I went with them.
