I notice alot of new laptops will have eSata ports which can also be used as USB ports. Is it a given that ALL eSata ports CAN be used for USB? Is it because the input shape is the same?? Also, what kind of uses can be made of an eSata port?

No, they are a different shape. Some eSATA ports are not eSATA/USB. Just look at it and you can see if it will support USB. If you can't tell, try the manual or spec sheet to see what type of port it is.

If it is a e-SATA/ USB port combination , then u can use it as a usb port. But there is a downside to this. The port isn't powered like other USB ports so u get a low data transfer rate and ur USB mouse/device might not work.
