Looking for a new notebook, I see there are many laptops that come close to the mythical "perfect" laptop I'm searching for. The Sony SA/SB series, the Samsung Series 7 14", and especially the Asus U36 are nearly perfect except for one thing: sound! The best portable notebooks come with mediocre sound systems, and the ones that actually have decent sound are either too big (Dell XPS 15, HP Envy, Lenovo Y570), or impossible to find (Asus N45sf). And all external speakers I've seen are just a hassle.
So here's my question: is it possible to replace the cheapo speakers that come in most laptops? How hard would it be to, say, open up an Asus U36, replace the speakers, and create a decent entertainment laptop?
If not, are there any low profile external laptop speakers that fit on the back of the screen, or on the sides of a keyboard?

The speakers are not what defines how good the sound is. Everything in front of them is more important than the final physical transducers.
What you're searching for is not possible/available (at least not at the sound quality you desire).
I suggest a good pair of headphones.
Good luck. -
I don't want an audiophile class system, or even anything close to decent desktop speakers. I just want a good 14" or smaller machine that can put out enough quality sound for a small group of people to easily hear a movie.
But I guess you're right: its more than just the speakers. Meh, just looked around, and I still can't find an N45sf for sale anywhere, but the Lenovo Y470 looks really good.
Can one improve laptop speakers?
