So, we currently have an old Dell Ultrasharp monitor in our office that stopped working. Basically, we would turn it on, and for about 1-2 seconds, it displays the screen image perfectly. Then everything goes dark. If we look very closely, we can see a faint image of the screen, which leads me to believe it's a backlight problem. We probably won't end up sending it for repairs if we need a new backlight, but the fact that it does display the image perfectly for a few seconds leads me to wonder if it's possible this is a connection problem that could be more easily fixed? Does anyone have experience actually fixing an external monitor?

What model is it? Depending on model it may not be worth the cost and trouble.

Almost 100% sure it can be fixed.
The problem you have is not the bulb though.
A lot of LCD monitors burnout pretty quick because of capacitors blowing out.
I know that from my experience I have fixed three LCD's simply by replacing the capacitors and a few resitors on the inverter board. That allowed the bulb to get power, and voila the screen worked again like new.

Ooh, thanks! We definitely have capacitors and resistors lying around in our lab, so I'll see about trying that approach.

Just make sure that you match capacitance, voltage and resistance.
