Well, if your stock hard drive spins at 4200rpm, upgradng it to a 5400rpm or 7200rpm hard drive will give you significant improvements in overall load times. You'll notice good improvement going from 4200 to 5400rpm. 7200rpm might give you some benefits over 5400rpm but it wont be as large as it is between 4200 and 5400rpm. The best price/performance ratio is a 5400rpm HDD, but the price of some of the smaller capacity(60gb) are not too far away from 100gb 5400rpm HDD's.

I agree with Miner. Faster HDD makes laptop much peppier than we think. But I think 7200RPM drive make much more difference than a 5400RPM drive. Though 7200RPM drives as much more expensive I think it is worth it. Seek times are much lower which matters most for responsiveness.

7200RPM drives have really come down in price lately, making the decision more difficult. The hard drive is usually overlooked for laptop performance.

but keep in mind that the 7200 rpm suck a lot of juice and generate quite a bit of heat.

Battery life difference is very small. They do run warmer though.

If you see the recent review of several laptop HDDs including 7200RPM drives, seems like that is not the case anymore. The power consumption is more or less inline with 5400RPM drives. Temp wise also not hotter than many 5400RPM drives.

Check out this review and decide yourself. (Some 5400RPM drives consuming more power than 7200RPM drives).

Looks like Western Digital is doing good in 5400RPM drives.
