You can, but it's a good idea to keep it on a flat tabletop and to clean the unit for dust often.

leave space under it - most draw air from underneath to cool it.

I leave my notebook on 24/7. It has been that way for almost one year with no problems.

Make sure the notebook gets good cooling.

I have one of those P4 Prescotts running at 3.06GHz. Running that badass 24/7 probably isn't a good idea, right? Unless I want to be charged with arson?

I ran a p4 Prescott (2.8 GHz Inspiron 9100) 24h and didnt experience much problems other than having a secondary fireplace. Just kidding...i didnt have any problems but i usually gave it a 10 minute break (shut it off) about twice a day.

The cooler is just a stand with a fan (or fans). It is noisier than a laptop but the noise level varies among different manufacturers. See at Newegg, they have a lot of models.

I had my laptop on all day and night (with a cooling pad) for awhile with no troubles, but standby is an excelent feature. I would use that if possible. While it will probably be OK, there is the chance that something could fail (which is why servers use RAID to preserve data).

My laptop will also bw on all day and night, just one question.

I had my previous laptop on almost all the time (Fujitsu Amilo) and then after a while when I wanted to use it on the battery the battery was almost dead. I got like 5mins out of it and nowadays when the plug disconnects the comp shuts down. So the question - would it be wise to disconnect the battery when i use the laptop on my desk wit AC adapter and take the battery with my just for the road?

    Regards, Mikko

How old was the Fujitsu Amilo when the battery went bad on you? They do go bad after a time.

I usually leave my battery in the laptop even though it runs 24/7. If the power goes out, then I don't loose my data. Every two weeks or so I run down the battery to keep it conditioned.

Don't you have some power manager which can optimize the battery lifespan
automatically? They usually come with the notebooks.

Otherwise, it's better to keep the battery in the laptop and just to reset (0%) it from time to time.

Thanks guys, answers really helped me.

The laptop was about two years old so the battery must have been old anyhow and that's also a good point to "reset" it every now and then.

    Cheers, great forums.

For all the people who run their notebooks 24/7, do you have any forms of aftermarket cooling? My notebook runs roughly 16 hours a day (only off when I sleep) and I see that is quite a bit of work for it, yet I don't have any other cooling such as a cooling pad/mat.

Edit - Didn't notice the 2nd page of posts.

So you mean there will be no harm if i leave the battery in the laptop? And laptop's battery is only last for 2 years? What if i don't use the battery often (only on the go), will my battery's life will last longer?

How about i take out the battery when at home and plug it in for on the go? is this a good idea? Please advise, thanks.

Prop the rear up 1/2" or so, just to help get some air under there.

Did you guys ever notice Hitachi offers the E7K100 line? It has the same MTBF as the 7K100, but they claim it is designed for applications requiring extended power on time.

Li-Ion batteries are made up of components that break down over time. So, as time goes by, the battery will lose its effectiveness. I actually have some 7-year old batteries that still work. Here's some good reading on the subject.

The worst thing possible for lithium ion battery packs' life a extended storage at high temperature under full charge. The conditions found in most laptops running on AC power for an extended period.

Continuous storage at 100% state of charge and 40°C(100°F) results in a permanent 35%/year capacity loss or 20%/year at 25C(78F). Depending on the laptop design, the heat of computer might keep the battery pack warmed up to 100F.

If you don't really use your battery much, keep it 1/2 charged and store in the drawer. If you rarely use your battery pack, but want it it be ready and have it fully charged, I recommend refrigerated storage in an airtight bag, or else you will suffer a permanent capacity loss of 5%/ 3mo at 25C(78F) temperature.

I don't understand how that cut out shoe box works? could someone exaplain? does it just allow the hot air to go into the box while the laptop is sitting on top?

Looks like it raises the laptop higher above the desk surface and the holes allow for airflow into the intakes on the bottom.

You guys should start producing such 'shoe boxes' (more stylish probably).... you could make money from that... :)
