It depends on the CPU socket that your laptop motherboard has.

You're referring to desktop CPU sockets, not notebooks. In notebooks, there are dual core i5 and i7 but only quad core i7s. Which CPUs are you thinking of upgrading to? You can easily upgrade dual core i5 to i7, but dual core i5 to quad core i7 depends on the notebook. As a general rule of thumb, if you can configure your notebook with a quad core i7, then you can upgrade the CPU in your notebook.

i think you need the pm55 motherboard to use the core i7 quads.
make sure you get pm55 and not the hm55 if you want to upgrade your cpu to a quad from an i5

I don't think that's true. While you need the HM55 chipset to use the IGP in the Arrandale CPUs, you can still use a Core i7 CPU instead, as long as you have discrete graphics.

There is no x200 I can see on the Lenovo website. Theres the x201, which can be upgraded up to a i7-620m (dual core).

It's not 100% for sure. There have been situations on this forum where it hasn't worked. As I stated before, general rule of thumb is if the option is there, it will be for sure doable. If not, then you'd have to experiment and test it out - some users have had success, others have not.

i think the pm55 is made for the clarksfield cpus and the hm55 for the arrandales.
but as sgogeta4 has mentioned the asus g73 which has a clarksfield 720qm has the hm55 chipset.
i also read some posts over at the dell forum stating that users with the xps 1645 and the hm55 chipset had to flash their bios with the dell xps 1647 (pm55) to get the clarksfield cpus to work.
so im thinking that it would boil down to bios support. also it would be good to ask your notebook manufacturer before attempting this.
    just 2 bits
