Can you add DDr3 to a laptop supplied with DDR2?

I am looking at a Sony Laptop with an Intel P series processor and motherboard that seems to support DDR3. But Sony supplies it with DDR2 memory.

Is it possible to just swap in new DDR3 memory in place of the DDR2 sticks or is there any thing that would stand in the way? Eg hardware slots are different or bios firmware etc?

They are not pin compatible, also ddr2 is 200pin and ddr3 is 204 or something.

Unless you do some crazy mod, I doubt it's possible.

It's physically incompatible. You can only use DDR2.

Is there a meaningful difference in real world performance between the two types?

As you've been told by several members, the answer is NO.

PS: If you see DDR3 200 Pin.... well.... don't buy it, as it is a misprint
I did buy it, but it turn out to be 204 pins

Indeed. What beats me is why people like you keep on replying to the thread after the first person cleared up the question. :D :D

That is a simple question, because some people are arrogant

About 6-8 months ago there was this member who for the life of him kept saying that his laptop had two memory slots for ddr2 memory, and 2 slots for ddr3 memory. We all know that such a laptop doesnt exist, but he kept going on and on about it.

What's the model no. of the motherboard and the laptop? I'm thinking someone switched the motherboard and components inside... however I find that almost impossible. Or they simply switched the laptop model no. tag.

All laptops are proprietary, you cannot randomly switch mobo's, you'd have to get the exact same model.

MSI makes the 790GX-8D motherboard and the P45-8D motherboard. 8 memory slots - 4 for ddr2 and 4 for ddr3 but this is a desktop motherboard.
