So I picked up a new 2TB Caviar Black today and when I tried to quick format it I got a message saying something along the lines of "Windows cannot perform the formatting of this drive". Long story short, I had to uncheck the "perform a quick format" box and only then would it go ahead and format the drive. So why would Windows refuse to quick format the drive while it would be more than happy to take its sweet time and do a full format? I've never run into this situation before.

It may be the "Windows does not support volumes greater than 2TB" thing, a problem with your HD Management CP (bad registry tags, corruption of prefs/priveleges, etc). Or possibly you needing to format the HD in GUID formatting instead of normal MBR fashion. What are you using the HD for? Storage, boot volume, what exactly is its purpose in your system? And most important, what OS version is the system?

When was the ladt time you did a major maintenance on your PC's boot HD or partition that contains the CP in question? Doing a Registry reconstruction/rebuild & de-fragmentation solves many software issues, you dig? Try the free Glary Registry Cleaner 1st, and see how many errors you got right now for starters, and try Wise PC Engineer for overall system upkeep if you want to avoid problems in general...do a System maintenance weekly or more frequently if necessary.

Good luck, maybe it will help - :)

The HDD will be used as a storage drive used primarily in a HDD dock. I hadn't thought of allocating it in GUID; maybe I'll give that try if the full format takes too long.

I use CCleaner occasionally, mostly for cleaning up before and after installations/uninstallations. I used the registry cleaner you mentioned anyway and it came up with 0 errors.

    Thanks for your input.
