I just got a new Thinkpad T61p (and love it). I was trying to use my old replacement drive from my T60 in the Ultrabay of my T61. For some reason, Vista doesn't recognize the drive. (Even in Disk Manager.) I tried the original Fujitsu main drive from IBM/Lenovo, and it works in the Ultrabay.

The drive I have is a Seagate Momentus 5400.2 120GB drive (model #ST9120021AS), and according to its specs, it is a SATA I (1.5Gb/s) drive, and should work. It works fine in the main drive bay of the Thinkpad (both the old T60 and the new T61), but won't work in the Ultrabay of either.

The 'factory' drives from both the T60 and T61 work in both locations (main bay and Ultrabay), so I know the Ultrabay works, etc.

My first thought was that the Seagate drive was SATA II, since the Ultrabay is SATA I only, but the main drive bay is SATA II. But, while it doesn't specifically say so, the specs ( http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.j...f32b010VgnVCM100000dd04090aRCRD&reqPage=Model) sure indicate it is a SATA I (1.5Gb/sec) drive, not a SATA II (3.0Gb/sec) drive.

Does anyone know why the Seagate drive would work in the main drive bay, but not the Ultrabay?

    Thanks,
    Karl

More info: I've found that I can get the Seagate drive to work in the Ultrabay if I either boot with it in there, or put the machine to sleep and wake it back up after I insert the drive. So, it appears that it will 'work' in the Ultrabay adapter, but that something isn't triggering either the BIOS or the OS (Vista Ultimate 32) to see it when it is inserted, but a power or sleep cycle causes it to 're-scan' for inserted devices and then it 'sees' the drive.

I've also tried telling Vista to scan for new hardware after I insert it, but it doesn't find it. So, that makes me think it might be the BIOS not seeing the insert? Still don't know why one drive would work (trigger the insert) but another one wouldn't, though. It would have to be something about the drive, of course, but I don't know what?!
