Can't wait to see when the new Merom core chps will bring us in performance. Same with the new ATI Mobility Radeon X1800 and X1800 XT.
I hate computers, I didn't get a 9300 because i wanted to wait for a dual core laptop. Then when the E1705 came out and i heard about the new core to come out after with much better performance and better battery life i decided to hold off again. Now the AMD Turion 64 X2 will be coming out sone so i might not even go with a Dell. The 64bit support for Windows Vista makes it very inviting. I wonder when Intel will get a clue and make there mobile line 64 bit?

Merom will be EMT64. It can be argued it will be better than Turion X2, since apparantly Core Duo has better power saving features than Turion X2 especially when it comes to Multicore power savings. Also Turion is a 90nm design whereas Core Duo (Yonah) and Merom are both 65nm fabbed procs.
Since Merom is still vaporware however its all speculation. Buy now wait for later? I tend to buy now. Resale for laptops tend to be pretty good, and I don't generally pay more than $2000 for my machines. Usually far less. Unlike desktops you can sell your machine and occasionaly get back even more than you paid even after 6-9 months of use.
Also do you really need to stay on the bleeding edge? Are you planning on using the machine as a hardcore gaming platform or something that will be subjected to heavy video editing, 3d rendering etc? -
where did you find that Merom will be EMT64. I haven't read that anywhere.
I don't like to stay on the bleeding edge, but when i buy something i usally keep if for a good 2-3 years, so i want to get something that will be new and advanced for the longest time. If you know what i mean. I would have hated to get a single core laptop 2 -3 months agao because all of those are already "old and busted"
I use my computer for gaming, video editing, encoding, surfing, programming and eveything else there is to do. -

Shows Conroe/Merom should have absolutely killer performance. -
Second, this will continue to be the case for a good while; single-core processors will be fine for most available software for quite some time.
Third, even after dual-core processors are needed for most software, single-core processors will do what they need to do with the software created before the absolute takeover, which will continue to operate and be supported.
Single-core processors will be fine for a good three years - unless you happen to feel the need for the most advanced cosmetic features of Windows Vista. Quite frankly, I don't give a rat's bunghole about transparency effects, and I find the idea of basing more important decisions on such a feature nothing short of laughable. -
But if some one who gets a Merom based laptop in a couple of months won't have to upgrade in your projected 3 years. The person who gets a single core will. That is my whole point, to have hardware that will last you as long as possible.
So whats so laughable about being a smart consumer -
-
a) Vista-proof: a single-core processor will handle most of it just fine. More specifically, I laugh when I consider the fact that some people are literally making buying decisions based on the new cosmetic features - especially when it involves putting off purchasing a tool they need.
b) future-proof: while it's clear that you realize it, I need to mention the fact that this idea, or anything similar, is absurd.
As far as buying for the future goes, I have two comments (aside from the fact that I agree that it is a good policy)
1) I have a feeling that we will see other major component advancements in the very near future, which will make current dual-core processors just as outdated as single-core processors. This will include optical drives, hard drives, power technology, video cards, and screens. Updates in screen technology will literally be revolutionary, in that it will change the way we use other products.
2) Build quality is comparably important in this regard.
Again, overall, it's hard (and silly) to disagree with you. -
Welcome to the world of technology. Because of its very nature, technology is always like this, you just have to learn when to cut off the waiting and buy! The waiting game is extremely dangerous if you get caught up in it.
-
Hehehe Who's to say when merom comes out AMD wont release something better within two or 3 months and you will have to wait again
Buy now.
-
last I knew, Moore's law still applied
maybe if companies would stop leaking plans so far in advance people would be happy to just buy when they need something. -
This is a freaking nightmare! My machine is only 3 1/2 yrs old and it feels anchient! I had a technician out here the other day and as soon as he saw it he said "oh thats an old system!" he then proceeded to ***** about the build quality and so on even though he works for dell! Anyway I'm waiting for something dual core and 64 bit that will run vista wonderfully-I'm waiting till sometime in 2007

That was my biggest downfall, planning months/years ahead for what system i was gonna buy. You can't do that with computers, even in 2-3 months time things can completely change.

Technology marches forward -- there are things going on in various labs (Intel, AMD, nVidia, ATI, etc.) that none of us mere mortals even have a clue about but we WILL hear about when a) the competition jumps ahead so a release (possibly premature) is necessary or b) there is a need to pump the quaterly numbers....planned release schedules and roadmaps are nice but at the end of the day it is still all about being fastest, most powerful, least power-consuming, and best press-release in a given time-quanta....
and to OTAKU, a BTW -- I am moving somewhere (anywhere) away from my Sony GRX780 and when I went to their site and looked at the "Trade-in and Up" program, filled out the form, and then got the response: "Machine too old" -- Geez!!!! even a token $25 bucks for this POS might have made me consider Sony as a next machine (not really, I WILL sign-on to the Class Action lawsuit if it ever gets going on the GRX MB Dimm socket solder problem) but it was not even offered....just left out in the dark to BUY A CORE DUO SAGER when they finally show up.....

"I'll take a good plan today rather than a perfect plan some tomorrow..." -
Yeah, I have to agree with everyone else here. I will never understand it when people do the, "I'm gonna wait till I can get something futureproof" thing. Go ahead and wait for merom, the next best processor will probably be announced a week later. HD dvd drives are coming out soon, as well as blueray. They may seem unnecessary now, but DVD burners were at one time too, you WILL have a need for them at some point. Which one should you get, HD or Blueray?? Maybe wait and see??
The waiting game can go on forever. If you want a computer, get one. Since Dual Core is out, sure, go ahead and snag that. Just do NOT think you are ever gonna buy a computer at that perfect moment when technology just stops moving!! -

Hi All,
When I did procurement and systems I was often asked "What sould I buy? Should I wait for..." My answer was always the same. Whan you find a machine that has all the bells and whistles that you want and will do all things you need it to, at a price you can afford and are willing to pay... buy it. The fact is that die sizes wil continue to decrease, chip density will continue to increase, battery technology will continue to advance, and processors will continue to get faster and faster. If you wait for the latest and greatest, or most future proof machine you will be computerless for ever.
Technology will not stop so any buyer has to make a decision as to when and where is the value of the product equal to or greater than the outlay needed for the aquisition.
Can't technology just wait and let everyone catch up?
