My laptop does this thing, where about 75% of the time when I turn it on, the screen gets progressively brighter and whiter, and just sits there frozen. When I can boot, it often happens during when I'm using the laptop sporadically, though sometimes it goes away.

I attached it to a separate monitor, using a DVI connector, and when I turn it on while it's plugged in, nothing happens on the external monitor, whereas it usually shows some form of boot screen.

    Laptop:

    Sager NP8150:

    2630QM
    8GB DDR3 RAM
    500GB HDD
    GTX 485M
    Matte 95% LCD screen

EDIT: New update. I don't think it's the GPU. If I physically push on both sides of the screen with my hands, the problem goes away temporarily, and everything on my computer continues. This seems now like a monitor issue--so is it just a poor connection you think, or should I replace the screen?

Try to reseat your display cable connections if you can... if that doesn't fix it, it does seem to be a screen issue based on what you said. Odd that you aren't getting anything on an external display though?

Why don't you just connect an external monitor with the internal monitor deactivated? Or can't you get to any display? Have you tried safe mode? What about varying the external connections? My display port responds differently than my VGA.

I've seen that happen several times with broken LCD cable.

Second vote for trying to reseat the display cable. If that doesn't work, I'd try to get a replacement cable and try that before I spent any real money on it.
