Ok so I tried downloading the firmware and then following the steps outlined here which are pretty easy and straight forward but for some reason when I boot from my USB it just sits on a blank screen with the flashing line.

I'm on a Sager NP8150 laptop running windows 7. No idea why this isn't working.

i was just about to update my M4 firmware to 309 when i saw this post, so i thought what the heck, lets try burning the iso to usb and save a cd.
However, it didn't work for me either. Instead, i went back to burning the firmware iso to a cd and booted from that. It worked flawlessly -

Just burn it to dvd and boot its much less messin about .. save time
done it in one minute..
One guy took it off laptop and updated in other desktop .. -

1. Prerequisite software: firmware ISO image, UltraISO
2. Run up UltraISO, loading the ISO file.
Retrieve the bootable information from it and save it as "m4.bif".
Extract file "MEMDISK" under \BOOT\ISOLINUX\.
3. New an ISO file,
Load m4.bif onto it as well as all the content of ISO file (including dir structure and files) except "MEMDISK".
Put the file "MEMDISK" extracted on step 2 back to the right directory and save ISO file to "M4.iso".
4. "Burn" the image you got previously into a flash drive and all done!

Phew, almost gave me a heart-attack.
I just ordered a M4 128GB a few days ago (on delivery) despite being fully aware of the 5200 hour time bomb bug. -
I got the same problem wih my m17x r3. I put the ssd and flash drive into another laptop instead.
-
Is 009 the latest or is this something newer?
Nevermind, 309 is newer. Quick google.
Hmmmm.... no speed improvements, only the hour fix. I am at 500 hours. At this rate it will take me 4 years to get to 4000 hours. No rush. -
ya, i'm in no rush either. I'm personally not a big fan of being an early adopter of a firmware bug fix lol.
-
take your time. Though I havent come to any problem either.
-
You have 5200 hours to decide
-
that is 216 days that is not lot

tilleroftheearth Wisdom listens quietly...
For everyone that thinks the only things fixed are what are listed in the 'release notes'; you're wrong.
I don't know what Crucial fixed in addition to the 5200 HR bug (they may even be related for all I know...), but the M4 in my system is noticeably more snappy (much less laggy...) since I went to firmware 309.
There is a reason the new firmware is offered - and it usually is not limited to simply fixing the known (general public...) issues.
I would recommend this firmware update to anyone who wants the maximum performance possible from their M4. -
@tiller
lol yes. I work in the software industry, I know how patches work through the various departments and people. That's why I know that there are ALWAYS bugs that get through; i rather just let other people find them and see how severe they are first.... its not like i'm recommending waiting for a year to see what happens.

I have problem, I can't update the firmware my M4 128Gb because it hasn't arrived yet.
Should I contact Crucial for support?

Did anybody upgrade the firmware via usb on Alienware m14x?
-
download the m4 iso > unzip (double check the downloaded file, mine is 128GB)
download ImgBurn > Burn the iso into a blank disc (the ultimate free disc burner)
All have you to do left is reset ur lappy (SSD should be in AHCI mode)
boot with the burned disc , type "yes" when they asked ..enter and you're done -
Edit, Found This:
-
My guess is what you posted would be if someone installed Windows Vista/7 on a machine "capable" of AHCI, but not configured to AHCI during installation.
Getting back to the post, when someone says change to AHCI, what is meant is there is a setting in your laptop's BIOS. In there, you can change the setting (again, if supported). Each BIOS is different, so you'll need to consult your vendor/manual to determine if/how you can configure this with your specific BIOS. The example by devillucifer does not apply to every laptop. For example, my laptop doesn't have IDE/AHCI setting, it has AHCI/RAID.
If you don't know how to boot into/change your system's BIOS, it is best to call tech support for your laptop as making unknown changes within BIOS may cause it to malfunction. -

All that registry hack does is it will allow you to switch between AHCI, IDE, RAID in your bios without having to reinstall windows. I would go a bit more though:
Set all these to 0
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\pciide
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\msahci
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\iaStorV
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\iaStor
For this firmware update, you need to be in AHCI in the bios or the Crucial update program won't find your M4 -
anyway to run via usb? ..i mean there was a way but the dos prompt gets stuck
