I am upgrading the hard drive in my hp dv6500 from the seagate 5400.3 160gb to the WD3200BEKT RT (Western Digital 320 GB).

During vista's installation, I get to the screen that says "Where do you want to install windows?". It gives me the new hard drive as an option, however, the "Format" button/link is grayed out???

I read that people have issues with SATA I versus II (3 gbs) and require a driver to be installed like the one here: http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodTypeId=321957&prodSeriesId=3368538&swItem=ob-54270-1&mode=4&idx=1. I've also read that vista does not need it here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=111334

Does hp dv6500 not like this hard drive to the point I can't use it? I NEED ntfs and I think vista does, too.

    Whats the deal?

i have just installed Vista on my friend's machine, the partition was not created beforehand and the format option was greyed out too. However, the installation went just fine, the other XP partition stayed were it was, so nothing to complain.
Your Format option is greyed out because there is no partition to format, Vista will create it by itself.

And, YES, you are right. Mine was the same. Just got nervous. After doing the 'do it yourself' for 10 years now (since beginning of college), I expect more 'work' to install an os. Everything worked perfectly, wireless, etc. This is going to take getting use to (NOT!)
