I have a hp pavilion zx 5000. it pretty dated but does what i need. i tried twice to update the graphics card off of the hp web site and it does what it supposed to do but after it reboots, i checked the version number on the card and it is still the same. is there anything else i should be doing after it reboots?

The version number shouldn't change. The number that changes is the driver number.

What graphics card do you have?
If you have an nVidia graphics card, you may want to check out laptopvideo2go's website, and you can download and install a newer set of a drivers than Hp has on their site.

For ATi cards, go to omega drivers, and see what they have for you. Usually they have drivers for a wide array of graphics cards.

Their are two things you need to know aout ATi,
    1) there are the graphics drivers
    and
    2) there are catalyst control center versions.

I dont think Catalyst 9 is compatible with your graphics card.

You could try uninstalling the previous drivers first (from Add/Remove Program, etc), and then restart, then install the new drivers. It should work..(If they are compatible)
