I have two of them attached to my home network as NAS. I've had them about 2 months and they are working just fine. Haven't used them for much but storage though. I've got them hanging off a Synology Diskstation 106j. They were easier to set up than the Wester Digital unit that I replaced with them. Hope this helps.

$100 is very cheap for a 500GB external hard drive. Online I see the price for it at about $116 or so.

As long as the drive has a decent warranty I would go for it.

That means if the drive breaks within one year from purchase due to mechanical failure (as in, it was a defect and not your fault) then they will replace it.

One year is average. If the warranty was 90 days or something I would have said don't buy it.

Personally, I'd buy a bare drive and an enclosure. That way you get a better warranty - Seagate 3.5" hard drives have a 5 year warranty on them.
