Ok, so I am thinking of getting a Dell laptop and am making different configurations on the web site, but something I just can't figure out is the different disk drives. I just want something that will allow me to burn music and pictures on to CD's. What is the difference between and which would you recommend:

    CD/DVD writer (DVD+/-RW) +Roxio Creator 10 Premier-Ultimate Burn/Authoring

8X CD / DVD Burner (Dual Layer DVD+/-R Drive)

Both drive have the ability to burn CDs and DVDs. However, each has its own advantage:

DVD+/-RW: This drive can burn to rewritable CDs and DVDs. This means you could erase tracks previously burned to a disc, then replace them with new ones.

Dual Layer DVD+/-R: This has the ability to write to dual layer DVDs. A dual layer can hold twice as much data as a normal DVD. For perspective, many movies released on DVD use capacities about that of a dual layer DVD.

Personally I never use either feature. Rewritable and dual layer discs aren't needed for my casual use. Both drives will work for your needs.

I've never seen a DVD drive w/o RW or DL capability, especially in a new laptop that's purchasable today.

Both drives are going to be the same. The only difference is going to be the Roxio Creator software that comes with the first drive.
