    Hey guys,

So I have an old desktop I'm trying to install Windows Server 08 R2 on, which is a 64 bit OS. The processor is a Celeron D 336. After checking with Intel's website, they say the processor's instruction set is 64 bit. It also says that the processor features Intel 64 technology.

    Intel® Celeron® D Processor 336 (256K Cache, 2.80 GHz, 533 MHz FSB)with SPEC Code(s)SL7TW, SL8H9, SL98W

Clicking on "Intel 64" under advanced technologies, it says "Intel® 64 architecture delivers 64-bit computing on server, workstation, desktop and mobile platforms when combined with supporting software.¹ Intel 64 architecture improves performance by allowing systems to address more than 4 GB of both virtual and physical memory."

Though it also says physical address extensions is 32 bit...

I'm fairly convinced that this processor is capable of 64 bit applications. However, when I try to install the server OS, the computer tells me my processor isn't capable of running a 64 bit process...what is going on? Is this processor only 32bit, and I'm misreading something on Intel's website? Is there a bios setting I need to change? I've gone through the bios and haven't been able to find anything.

Yes, the Celeron D 336 does support the x86-64 instruction set, so 64-bit editions of Windows should work--try a different edition of 64-bit Windows (non-server) and see if that works.

But, as this is a desktop question for DTR and not NBR, thread is now locked.
