I'm thinking of buying either a Lenovo G550 or Dell Inspiron 15. Need it for study writing essays, powerpoint, some desk top publishing, emailing, Youtube, watching tv and dvd, some low key games.
Is the celeron 900 2.2 going to be very slow?

The Celeron 900 is a 45nm Penryn based architecture so it's going to be a lot better than previous iterations of Celerons. It's based on the Core microarchitecture, only it has just 1 core. It's not very smart on battery life, and gaming wise I'd have to go with the C2D seeing as how most games nowadays will stress a dual core machine, much less a single core one. But the Celeron is going to be a good deal cheaper... so It's up to you whether you want better battery life and a possibly better gaming, or save some money. Define "low-key games"... Also the Core 2 Duo will future proof your purchase better than a Celeron would.

Edit: Think of the Celeron 900 as a gimped and halved T6600.

Sweet. Not a gamer, just arcade type games. Better battery life and future proofing sounds good.

Another thing - if you can wait, it may be worthwhile to wait as the Core i3 laptops are all coming out in the US, and us in Australia should get them fairly soon.

Thanks for that but don't know how long I can wait. My Acer is at the shop having it's hard drive investigated. So I it looks like either I get a new hard drive or a new computer. The Acer I have is 5 years old and has been great so far.

I would wait because you want to futureproof your system. In like a year or two you're going to be like dang i should have bought a dual core system etc etc. So, if its not too much difference, i would consider going with the dual core C2D

Core 2 Duo anytime... Celeron 900 runs hotter and is slower... but if u can wait , get a core i3 or core i5 laptop... corei3 and corei5 are already out in UK... should come down under soon!
