I've just upgraded my laptop from Celeron M 410 to Core Duo T2400. First time I booted the system ran very slow and it froze like every 10 sec. When it was done installing the ACPI Multiprocessor stuff and such, I rebooted and after that I couldn't get into windows. When it makes the normal windows xp progressbar, it freezes when it's almost done. If I run the system in fail safe mode, it works fine and doesn't freeze at all. I then tried reinstalling but once windows xp has copied installation files and tries to boot, it fails like before. The same thing happens when I try to install vista then it stops when it's almost done loading setup.

When I was in Windows XP, I did check what it said about the CPU and XP did notice it as a dual core from Intel called T2400 and CPU-Z gave me the information as well so from what I can see it has to be a bios/chipset problem. The system is based on ATI Xpress 200M and the Celeron M 410 is a Yonah as well as the Core Duo (Socket M).

Anyone who know what I can do?

NOTE: I've checked temperatures and my Celeron M runs at 42C where the Core Duo only runs at 35C so don't tell me it's a heat problem since the laptop doesn't get hot at all.

I've just disabled Core Multi-processing for now which solved the problem but I guess that also means that it doesn't make fully use of both cores now but I'll wait and see in windows whether it detects one or two cores.

Do you know if the BIOS supports dual core CPUs? Can you find an updated BIOS? The compatible socket is only half the equation.

The BIOS does detect it as a dual core and it's the latest version of the bios downloaded from the toshiba website. My laptop is a Satellite Pro A120 PSAC0E.

The problem isn't the OS. I did try to reinstall before but it just froze before entering setup exactly like when it booted. It was like it overloaded the voltage or something since the CPU cooler began to blow like 100% after it had frozen (like 10 seconds after).

Vista is installed now and it says T2400 @ 1.83 GHz and doesn't seem to complain about anything now.

Checked it now. It runs as a Core Solo atm since I disabled the Core Multi-processor option in the bios. For now that'll do but I'll try to either write to toshiba or similar to hear why they support dual core when it doesn't work. I bet it's just a minor bug in the bios that perhaps make the ACPI stuff fail.

Well toshiba wouldn't really give me support but I did get a little. The supporter tried to give me a microcode update but unfortunately it didn't help on anyhing. I've just found several laptops running ATI Xpress 200M with Core Duo so it definitely should be possible. For me it still seems like the bios has an ACPI bug and I've tried to figure out if they were using award, phoenix or ami bios without luck. So unless they want to give some kind of support / want to fix their bios, it seems like I have to purchase a replacement motherboard but with ie. 945GM chipset that has support for it (newer A120 model but exact same form factor).

I thought they changed a few of the pins on the Core Duo CPUs.

nope. Core Duo/Solo based to Core 2 Duo based is a straight swap as long as the bios microcodes dont coplain (and its more VRM dependant than microcodes anyways).

VRM is the power specifications intel uses to define power requirements of their cpu's. Yonah/Merom are the same as far as I know.

    edit

I misread your statement I think.. yes there are pins changed on Core Duo, but the socket is changed from the generations previous (Banias, Dothan) so its a moot point.

No. Celeron M 410 has the same pin layout as Core Duo T2400 and they're both based on the Yonah core.

    edit

Didn't notice page 2 but again, you may be thinking of the Celeron M 3xx series which have a different pin layout compared to Core Duo.

I have an Asus A6rp. Here are the specifications.

    Intel Celeron M 440 1.86Ghz 533FSB
    ATI Radeon Express 200m Chipset
    2 gig of ram
    80 gb of HD
ATI Radeon Express 200m Video 256MB.

I am wondering if it is possible to upgrade the processor to a core duo or core 2 duo. Any adivice is appreciated.

TNX a lot.. please email me.. [email protected]

    thank you very much... GodBless,,,
