Celeron U3400 vs Atom D525

Which CPU is better? (performance + battery life)

Basicly a battle between:

The Celeron has things like out of order execution, more memory channels, L3 cache, 32nm, while the D525 has hyper-threading and a higher clockspeed. See here: Compare Intel® Products, I think the Celeron would be better all around, but maybe the D525 would win in speed?

 

In Passmark(benchmark) the Celeron U3400 ranks 950 points, while the Atom D525 gets 717.

Celeron U3400: 1.07GHz, 2MB. 2 Cores, 2 threads. TDP: 13 watt.

Atom D525: 1.8GHz, 1MB. 2 Cores 4 Threads. TDP: 17 watt.

I believe that the Atom is slower because of all the power saving features reduce some performance.

 

I don't get it... The Atom has more threads, higher cpu clock means the Atom will run faster but with less battery life right? How come the Celeron has a better score?

 

I'm not sure, but the U3400 is a 32nm chip and the D525 is 45nm. Smaller than nanometer, the better performance. The U3400 also has a graphics card built in, the D525 doesn't.

 

The Atom and the Celeron U3400 have very different microarchitectures -- so, you can't use the frequency as a means to compare them. I'm not a CS guy so I'll point you here for a basic overview:

That said, I would take the U3400 over the Atom processor any day. Atom processors in my experience tend to get bogged down/lag even in basic tasks and are not very good at multitasking.

 

I see. I also googled abit and saying the U3400 is better. Few months ago the SU4100 seems a very popular one, how is this one compared to the U3400?

I also had bad experience with Atom's during multitasking but was hoping that the D525 with 4 threads show some difference.

Just to be sure: The U3400 wins D525 in battery life right? By alot of only a small amount?

 

The SU4100 score 982 in Passmark. So its 32 points faster than the U3400. The SU 4100 also uses less power at 10 watts.

 

That^. IMO, the U3400 would wipe the floor with any Atom. The Arrandale architecture is superior to the Atom in any of it's derivatives. It's a more efficient architecture also, so battery life would likely be much better than Atom systems.

 

If I had to choose from one of these 2 laptops, I would get the EEE PC. Although it has the slower Atom processor, it does have ION2, which is WAAAAY faster than Intel HD.

 

But be realistic... in something with an Atom, are you really going to be gaming it up? I'd take the U3400 and GMAHD, because it will handle any HD video, and still get awesome battery life. Optimus is still a joke IMO.

 

If you like to play games the ION will win hands down.

In all other tasks the U3400 will beat the D525 hands down.

What do you want to do with it?

Batterylife will not make much of a difference I expect (based on reviews).

 

I doubt I will play any games (maybe some flash games or old games like baldurs gate, diablo II, warcraft3 from time to time) on the laptop, it's for school use and to watch HD movies on my tv (HDMI) from time to time. So a long lasting battery is a priority. I would really love a 13 inch one but it seems they are much more expensive.

I also found a old acer 1810TZ series and some other options to buy, which of these processors are better?

I've compared these on the intel site and it seems the old 45nm are quite strong but I have no idea what the 32nm offers.

This is the absolute best buy at the moment in Europe: Lenovo U350 with SU4100 and 8 cell battery (10 hours real battery life) for 379,- euro at Cyberport.de

The Acer 1810tz with SU4100 is also very good, over 8 hours of real battery life.

The SU4100 and SU7300 perform nearly identical. A little better than U3400.

On my SU4100 I got 1090 Passmark CPU points.

 

I also live in the netherlands but can I order via amazon.de for free "verzendkosten" (shippingfee?)

Besides the battery life I'd also love it to be able to handle firefox + microsoft office with no problem (i mean tabbing in and forth, on single core atoms they lag). I wouldn't mind sacraficing few hours of baterry for that

Edit: 2GB RAM isn't enough for W7 right? Might take a 3GB RAM instead. I have the option to install windows in english right?

 

Windows 7 with 2GB runs fine. With 3GB it will be quicker.

My last question would be (since I never had any other netbook than a single core Atom, which sucked), how powerful is the SU4100. What can it handle and what is it made for. I guess the higher MB cache allowes it to multitask much much better than the Atom right (Atom still has 4 threads!?).

Google 'CPU benchmark' and you will find it quickly

Notebookcheck and Passmark have good lists, but the Passmark list contains quite a few errors.

The SU4100 scores slightly over 1000 in Passmark. It's a fine performer for web, music, torrents, messaging, 1080p videos and webcam. It can handle those tasks while multi tasking too. Light to medium Photoshop use works too.

It's not suitable for people that do heavier photo editing, math calculations or VMware.
