Do Celeron-M 300s and 400s have the same socket and could a 400 be used to upgrade a 300?

    Thanks

They have the same socket, FSB, though the 400 does run slightly warmer than the 300. Could well work, perhaps someone on here has some experience in upgrading their laptop CPU.

Edit: my mistake, I was thinking of the 300mhz and 400mhz Celerons! D'oh....

    No, Celeron M 400 series are on Socket M, 300s are on S 479. It won't work.

The upgrade will not work as posted. It's like asking if a Pentium M can be upgraded to a Core Duo . . simply not possible.

The latest Celeron M, the 400 series, is based on the Yonah core, and uses a 533MHz FSB. The older Celeron M 300 series was based on the Dothan core and used a 400MHz FSB.

Ok, thanks Chaz! What a pity.

Next question, could a Celeron-M 300 be upgraded to a Pentium-M? I think there are some p_ms with 400MHz fsb right?

That's right, there are quite a few Pentium-Ms that have a 400mhz FSB. The Pentium M 735, 745, 755 and 765. Though I think in most cases you will not notice any difference in applications, for general windows task I find no difference between my old CellyM 1.5 and my PentyM 1.7.

as long both Celeron 1.5 and a p-m 1.6 run a 400 mhz FSB they are interchangeable. As long as they are both 479 pin socket. The celeron use 1 meg l2 cache and the p-m use 2meg l2. Another difference is that the p-m uses speedstep and the celeron doesnt. gl

This is mostly theoretical, but thanks for the replies anyway. I can't imagine my Celly-M will be too slow for anything in the near future!

Oh yeah and I checked the price of Pentium-M 7*5 chips... ouch!

I prefer my cel-m 1.5 vs the 1.6 p-m. Both are identical, 512 megs/5400 rpm hdd. My cel-m is a gateway with a 15.4" the p-m is a dell with a 15". the cel-m seems faster plus it has a scroll, the dell dont. I like the scroll.
