Howdy
I have an old HP6220 with a Centrino (Dothan) 1.73Ghz, its nippy enough for what it does, and i play the odd occasional prehistoric game on it, i have already chucked a 250Gb drive in there, and i can get a 2.0Ghz Centrino for $50, that will pop straight in and work, my question is, is it worth the upgrade? will there be a noticeable difference?
PS. to those about to tell me to buy a new laptop, i also have a DV7.
thanks in advance

not worth it IMO.
If you want you can use setfsb to overclock it. You could get around 2.3ghz or more. If you need some help with setfsb check the thread in my sig about setfsb and clockgen.
I don't think you will notice the difference in day to day stuff. -
thanks for that fella, how about the Centrino 2.13Ghz?
thanks

What kind of stuff do you use it for?
I think this would give you better bang for buck:

Edit: BTW centrino is a platform not a processor (centrino is when you have an intel chipset + intel cpu + intel wifi). -
i use it to control the telscope in my observatory, although i VNC onto it from inside my lounge, so i thought faster might help with encryption etc and multi-tasking etc.
-
If you're bored, you could try a Pentium M (400MHz FSB) pin mod. Probably even less worth it nowadays than it used to be.
-
Like moral hazard said, save your money, overclock it and spend that extra $50 on your next full laptop upgrade.

i have a DV7 with 1TB and bluray etc, was just after some info for this cheeky little number

that is the coolest thing I ever heard.
I guess for that use it is worth the $50. -
thanks
its pretty schmick ... i use planitarium software on it, i click on what i want to image, the scope slews to that object, the laptop has the Canon DSLR software, so i can take images while playing UT3 inside

It's only going to make sense if you currently utilize your CPU for 100% for longer periods of time. Use Ctrl-Alt-Del to check if you do.

Good suggestions so far. Not worth $50 for a minor cpu speed increase. Better value would be:
- free cpu speed: setfsb and/or pinmodding multiplier or FSB.
- if you want faster loading times, consider swapping out the optical drive for a SSD in a sata-to-pata caddy (see sig) to host your oss and apps. 80GB X25-M G2 to be released next week for US$225. sata ssd can be transplanted into new equipment later down the track. -
I agree with this advice, but I would also consider a RAM upgrade... it may yield a better performance upgrade for $50. If you're using XP, 2GB of RAM is ideal. For Vista, 3-4GB is ideal.
Btw, thanks for sharing that image. Is it a nebula? -
XP runs optimal with 1GB already. Upgrading to 2GB only benefits performance if you're actually maxing out 1GB. Which is impossible to do unless you're running CS4 with large images or other memory hungry applications.

You sir.... are my hero.

Also, I'd reccomend overclocking before buying anything. You'll probably get more performance than by just spending 50bucks..
And you could be so care-free about overclocking it, if it goes on the fritz from the OC'ing, than just spend the 50.
Centrino 1.73 to 2.0 - is it worth it?
