After purchasing my notebook, I realized that I needed to replace my 24x cd drive with a combo drive...a Dell customer service rep placed an order for me for the new combo drive and I should be receiving it within a couple days..my question is, I was under the impression that I had to return my notebook to have the drive switched. I have absolutely no idea how to change drives on my own, am I supposed to ship my notebook back to Dell to have them do that or what? I'm completely clueless. Any help appreciated!

They will send you just the drive. There is usually one (1) screw that holds the drive into its bay, and you can yank out the drive and install the new one. Dell will probably want you to ship back the old one, so they know you aren't ripping them off...

so installing the new drive is definitely something I could do on my own and wouldn't need a professional (ie like someone from best buy) to do for me?

I dont see why not, I replaced my own DVD/CDRW combo drive to a DVD burner. But I still having problems with the darn bracket (to make the drive secure). Sigh. Sorry to hi-jack your thread, inkyquills, but does Best Buy or any store alow you bring any notebook's parts and they remove the screws?
Thanks.

Some dell laptops have a release button for their drives.
You might not even need to unscrew anything.
Lok atound the buttom or side of the laptop for that.
if not 1-2 screws should be holding it together.
After you install it reinstall the Burning software so it recognizes the burning capability and drive. -
If it's an Inspiron there will be one screw on the bottom of the notebook that will allow you to pull out and replace the optical drive. Some Latitudes have a button to release it.
