Perhaps this belongs in Mods and Upgrades forum but how difficult is it to change a CPU on an Athlon based notebook?

is it the same CPU as a desktop?

is it worth the upgrade from a X2-4200 to X2-4800?

It is a major job which involves removing the cover and it will void your warranty and you might damage some other parts also. I don't think the performance increase would be worth the risk.

The ease of upgradability largely depends on the design and how easy the manufacturer makes it to be. In some laptops it is extremely easy in some others it is quite the opposite.

Most laptops use mobile Athlon64's or they are quickly being replaced by the newer Turion64 mobile processors. It is not a good idea to try to switch from a mobile to a desktop cpu as the power and heat output varies and might affect performance.

Which laptop are you looking at? The only X2 based system is the Clevo D900 and it is way too heavy & expensive to be even considered as a laptop. But it does make a good desktop replacement.
