I'm trying to upgrade the hard drive on my Dell XPS M140. Here's the Dell web site regarding this:
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/xps140m/en/sm/hdd0.htm
Now, the hard drive in the system was encased in what I assume is a heat sink; the hard drive I bought from Newegg doesn't have one. That Dell site doesn't mention it at all. And of course, not knowing that the screwdrivers I have weren't the right size, I managed to bend it all to hell.
My question is, do I need this panel? I can fit the hard drive in without it, but I don't dare start the computer until I know more about this. And, if it's necessary, where can I buy one?
Thanks,
Max

It's actually a tray, but I suppose it could be used as a heat sink
To get it, you'll need to buy it from Dell(or ebay perhaps), but whether its necessary or not, I'd say it would be, its there for a reason. -
Aha, a tray. Armed with this information, I believe I've found the replacement part (Dell Part#G5044). I would have been searching all night for "notebook hard drive heat sink." Thanks!

Parts-People sell Dell parts, here's a link to the hard drive caddy you're looking for.
Dell also has a Spare Parts Department that you can call to order parts.
