Hi, I am new to this forum.
I am considering changing the original HDD on my Lenovo X1 to a SSD. Is it just a simple removal of HDD and plugging in the SSD in the same slot as the HDD?
My next question is how to format the new SSD and install Win7 on it? The X1 did not come with a Win7 disk.
Thank you.

Do you mean the X1 Carbon ultrabook? If yes, after a quick check, it looks like it only comes with SSDs already.

Ok, looked at the specs, it's crazy how the X1 Carbon pops everywhere on google and the X1 is a bit more scarce in the results. Looks like you'll needa 7mm thick SSD, something like the Samsung 830, Samsumg 840 Pro, Intel 520, etc.
As long as your HDD is easily accessible, it'S as simple as you descibed.
As for Installing Windows, any windows 7 install disc for the version you have will work or you could get the iso file and make bootable media from there.
