My optical drive in my XPS m1530 decided to call it quits on me so I have been searching for a replacement. I did some research and purchased another slot load drive. I opened up the laptop last night (getting to the optical drive really is a pain), when I tried to replace the optical drives i noticed the connectors are completely different. The dell one has a rectangular shaped connector and the new optical drive i purchased has a mini sata type connection.

I'm not sure what my options are here, can I replace the connector or do I need to get an optical drive that works specifically with the connector in the laptop?

my guess is that u got a Sata dvd drive, while ur laptop is using the IDE drive. thus the different connector. try to return the drive and get a IDE drive. hope it helps~

You also need to realize that the Dell drive has a special bracket around it. Maybe you bought the right drive, but you need to take the bracket out of the old drive, and stick it to the new drive. Of course the bracket will only work if it's the same type, i.e. PATA/PATA or SATA/SATA.
