I have the ASUS G71GX-RX05 from NewEgg (can't post links, but it's still on NewEgg so you can check it there).
Either the graphics or the CPU fan broke a few years ago, I'm not sure which. It hasn't been a problem anyway, I've been playing games this whole time. But I should replace the fan anyway, right?
But how do I find out 1) which fan broke 2) what model fan I need to buy to replace it?
I'm a scaredy cat when it comes to hardware :x
I also need to replace my Wireless card, because it's not very good under Linux. Assuming I pick one which is compatible with Linux, will any wireless card do? Or are there certain types that fit in certain laptops only? I'm talking about the ones that go inside the computer.
Thanks for your help.

Broke as in breaking? Take the machine apart and see - you might get the part number there as well.
cheers ... -
Meaning it actually broke a few months ago. Or I think it did. I turned on the laptop and heard a loud sound getting louder and louder, thought it was the hard drive, but it wasn't.
Ever since then it seems like the other fan (cpu) works more than usual. It was a quiet laptop, but now it seems the cpu fan is on all the time to compensate.
I'll open it up and get a part number, thanks
A bit scared because last time (another computer) I had someone replace the fan several times, and it never worked out -
Tsunade_Hime such bacon. wow
Uhh when I opened up my G71GX-RX03 (Best Buy edition), there was only 1 fan for the GPU and CPU heatpipes.
Unless you can find the official English service manual (which you only get an ASP), you'll need to get the Chinese ones off the internet. Or you could try Ebaying ASUS G71GX fan.
As for the WLAN, you'd be best off with Intel WLAN. Their driver support is far greater than Atheros and Realtek garbage. Also they are more reliable than the other brands. -
Sounds like something clogged your fan, clean it out and you will probably be surprised how much goes in there. I clean my fans every two weeks since pet hair and dust like to block the vents otherwise.
Changing graphics(?) fan on Asus G71gx
