Glad to hear that worked out.

Just remember, when you're installing the new heatsink, whatever you do, don't forget the thermal compound! A heatsink on a CPU is useless if there's no thermal grease or paste to conduct the heat!

I gave him some thermal compound in a plastic cup, so all he needs to do is use a q-tip to put the paste onto the cpu and gpu.

Credits to K-Tron. and also, how do you know if the heatsink is working properly? The temperature is very cool.

Download core temp, and rivatuner. I sent you a PM with information about the software, and links where you can download it.

I really love to see this worked. A gpu upgrade finally now everyone can shut up with " its not possible "

It worked, but I mean I had to take the entire system apart down to an empty plastic shell to swap the motherboard. I do not think he was expecting that I would have to take his entire machine apart, but it works so I am happy and so is chlwotjd678.
Tippey thanks for helping out on this, chlwotjd678 bought exactly what you said and everything worked out.

Yes it is. The ATi 3450 is about the size of a penny. The only notable difference between chlwotjd678 intel graphics motherboard and the 3450 motherboard was the actual 3450 chip, the onboard memory and the screw mounts.

The PCB is just blank on the intel graphics model, so there is no way you can just solder the 3450 in, Dell unfortunately did not put the solder tracings on, so you need to buy a whole new motherboard to upgrade the graphics

Please note that you need to buy a new motherboard and a new heatsink to upgrade to the 3450 graphics
The same should apply with the studio 17 model as well

Yes, because anyone can buy just the GPU to solder on.
And then we all know how easy it is to surface mount solder a 500 pin BGA the size of a penny.

Well, what I'm really saying is this wasn't a GPU upgrade, as some people have mentioned. It was A MOTHERBOARD upgrade. Upgrading GPUs IS STILL IMPOSSIBLE. Replacing motherboards, now we're going down a totally different road. That's half of the system in most laptops.

This is true, this was a motherboard replacement to upgrade a graphics card.

You can actually solder BGA, my brother showed me a few weekends ago. Some of the onboard memory on his Dell Inspiron 2200 became loose, and well he is an electrical engineer who never ceases to amaze me. I can say that today his laptop works and that memory card has now been replaced.

You can only really do it with memory cause it has relatively few pins.
Upgrading integrated graphics is impossible, unless their was a different motherboard you could get

Good job Ktron. Glad it turned out well for this youngen. Could have been a nightmare on his own.

Depends how much it costs for a new motherboard with dedicated graphics. Labour work is free if you do it yourself but will cost more if you get a shop to do it.

The motherboard costed me 100 bucks and 35 dollars for the heatsink.

Yup. The ati 3450 is soldered on to the motherboard. Make sure that when you buy a motherboard it has the ati on it and when you buy the heatsink, make sure that it covers the ati 3450
