    Hi,

My charger adapter for my ASUS Zenbook U500VZ/UX51VZ is broken. I need a new one. I just got an adapter from an ebay seller in the US. It was the wrong one and it wont fit, even though I gave them pictures and other info.

Can anyone help me find out what plug this is? Is it a new plug or has it been used in other laptops? May it be a 5.5mm x 2.5mm plug?

Your images aren't showing, that doesn't help... Have you tried ordering one directly from Asus?

Sorry, I have now updated the links.

No have not talked to ASUS directly yet, im about to send them an email. I was hoping for someone here to help me faster than I believe ASUS will help me.

    Thanks in advance!

    Thanks for your reply.

The second one you list from Ebay is the same reseller I bought one from. After the order I asked about wattage, and apparently it is only 65W. I told them what I needed and gave them pictures, but they still sent me the wrong plugs.

I was just over at a local retailer and bought an universal adapter, but of all 10 plugs none fitted. Doh.

Im gonna send an email to the first link you posted.

Still want info on the plug! Is there any other laptop that uses this plug?

I'm not quite sure about that, I think they designed this one to fit the zenbook specifically - but it's essentially a copy of the mac's adapter design with a different tip.

From the picture it seems both have the same tip, but the first link has the dimensions of the tip from what I can see, so you should be able to decide whether it's the correct one or not.

Looks like asusparts.eu finally added UX51VZ as a model and they have a charger there for 60eur. I sent them an email asking if its the original one, I will let you guys know how it went.

Update: Ok, so for anybody interested in buying the original charging adapter, it is now available at www.asusparts.eu. However, they order directly from ASUS and they expect approximately 4 weeks or delivery until they have it in their stock... Hopefully this can help someone with similar problems.

"essentially a copy of the mac's adapter..." what??? That just doesn't make any sense. All power adapters are in fact copies of each other with different tips, the voltages don't even matter from 19-21v, for all we know Dell adapters don't even output 19.5v.
They are actually made by the same manufacturers across different brands and these are different than the manufacturers who make the laptops.

Mac is probably one of the few exceptions. To say that a PC charger is a copy of a mac charger really doesn't make sense.

Are you really going to pay 60 euro and wait 4 weeks? As it should be clear, any adapter, even one from 10 years ago should work essentially the same as your original - the only difference is the tip, and I'm sure you could find the right tip somewhere. Dell, Toshiba and HP use the same tip so there has to be a different brand or Asus model that has used that tip before.

I suggest you search by the power adapters actual model number on Ebay and find yourself a used original adapter there. Its almost impossible that the adapter you need isn't available for a much cheaper price on ebay - whats more than likely is that all the sellers don't know about compatibility with this newer model of laptop.

Im gonna buy it only because i really want the original adapter, but i also want to get a third party adapter asap. I ordered one from a company on ebay telling me that it was the correct adapter but turns out it was not. They sent me two extra adapters/converters but none of them would fit. I also bought a universal adapter set with 10 different plugs and none fitted. Right now I am waiting for a reply from the ebay seller if they can send me the correct one.

I am unsure of how to measure the dimensions, even though I googled some. Some sites says 4.0mm x 1.3mm ( 90w ASUS EXA1202YH ADP-90YD B charger ac adapter), but that site (and its sister sites) seem very unreliable according to rating sites. Cant find any other 4.0mm x 1.3mm plugs anywhere and i am not sure how they came up with the dimensions, to me it looks like 4mm x 3mm..

Can anyone tell me what dimensions this adapter plug have?

@niffcreature, I meant the design. You made such a huge deal out of a small misunderstanding.. -.-

But now that I read what I wrote again, it sounds vague, I'll give you that.

    Another update.

Enertronix who made the original adapter tells me that the dimensions are 4.0 x 1.2 x 9.8 mm, but I am not sure how they measure that.

I am still waiting for the original charger from asusparts.eu, but in the meantime in hunting down a third party adapter that fits the u500vz. The first ebay seller that sold me the wrong adapter have admitted theri mistake and will soon start producing this tip in their factory, but it may take a month or so. They offered me money back which I will take.

I have found another ebay seller claiming to have adapters fitting Zenbook u500; 4.5 x 2.8 mm. im giving this a shot. Will update as soon as I find out the dimensions of this god damn charger tip.

It's not the same dimensions as the original so it should not fit, unless you were given wrong dimensions. You need to find something that's exactly 4.0 x 1.2 x 9.8. The first link I gave you actually has the same dimensions: 90W Asus Zenbook Touch U500VZ B43V-CU024X AC Power Supply Adapter so you could try that too.

Edit: I ran the website up and it seems sketchy, I suggest you search for some other trusted reseller that has the same adapter as this one. Just make sure the dimensions are the same or the tip will not fit in your laptop.

Thank you for your helpfullness. However, I just now measured the broken original adapters connector tip with a measuring tool and it is indeed 4.5mm wide in the outer diameter and 2.8mm on the inner diameter. It seems as if I was given the wrong dimensions from the manufacturer, or they measure in a different way...

However, it remains to see if I finally ordered the correct one. Should be here tuesday/wednesday next week, i'll update this thread!

I received it today and it is indeed the correct adapter plug.

It works fine, but the laptop now reports the following error message when I have it plugged in:

"The power connector is not plugged in properly. Please disconnect and reconnect the power adapter".

I have looked at the plug and it looks identical to the broken one I have. It is 90W 4.74A 19V adapter so it should be the same.

What I wonder is, can this somehow damage the laptop? Should I be worried? I googled the error message but could not find anything at all..

I bought it from: AC Adapter for Asus EXA1202YH ADP 90yd B ADP 90YDB Power Supply Cord Charger PSU | eBay

ipkryss some computers utilize a "smart" charge port, meaning they place a chip in the charger that tells the computer if it's a OEM branded charger or not.

It is a possibility the Asus is doing the same thing.

Ok, that seems fair. I have ordered an original adapter from asusparts.eu and will get it in approximately 2-3 weeks or so. If I am sure that there is no risk of me breaking my laptop I can just wait until then and see if this is the case.

I want to make sure that it does not damage my laptop though! Anybody who got more insight in this?

    What the f*ck??

If I have the laptop plugged in and close the lid, I can feel electricity in the chassis when I stroke the back of the screen.. It is a very peculiar sensation in my fingertips and it goes away instantly if i unplug it from the AC adapter.

I cant recall that I felt this earlier when on the correct adapter. Should I be worried? Im not sure if its the adapter or if there was any damage on the laptop when I used the short curcuited adapter..

    God damit.

I still have not received a new original adapter yet.

I think I have figured out why there is current in the chassis when I charge with this new charger - it's a 2pin plug instead of a 3-pin (with grounding). I assume some grounding current goes through the chassi instead of through the adapter.
Still wont help me unless I take the tip of this charger and solder it onto another adapter with the same specs that already have grounding.

Oh gosh. New preliminary delivery date for the original charger: 1/3-2013. One more month!!! This is such a scandal, buying a laptop for 1800€ and getting a replacement charger for it is impossible the first 4 months after its release. What??

Anyway, the charger I have now that I got from ebay (the one giving me 2 problems; popup about charger nog plugged in correctly, and a small electric sensation when stroking the back of the screen on the aluminum chassi) works fine except for the two issues. I believe that the reason it gives an error message is because of the same smart plug technology HP uses (the plug looks the same with the pin in the middle). I also believe that the small electric going through the chassi is because of the fact that the charger is not grounded (only 2 pin, not 3 pin). I have used this charger to charge my laptop twice, and I have not noticed anything odd at all. Battery life seems to be the same, no crashes, played world of warcraft for about an hour when plugged in.

My assumption is that the charger works fine until I get the original one, and it should not harm my laptop unless I get a power strike in my electrical outlets in my home. Could anyone who have more insight give me some tips? Should I definitely not use this non-grounded charger, or do you believe it is fine to use it for a month until I get the original?

Replies are very appreciated. This is getting out of hand...

Alright so I've been using the adapter for a week now and it works, I guess I can use it until I receive the original adapter.
