Where can I pick up a cheap Core 2 Duo Mobile to replace my Celeron M in the UK or elsewhere? I've got a Socket 479 and 965 mobo.

T2310 or t233O...IT'S MARKETED AS A "DUAL CORE" BUT IT'S A C2D running at 533/ 1 MB cache.
Go to www.pricewatch.com to check on prices, etc.
Or here...

Or real cheap:

I assume you meant socket 478... -
No Socket 479. That's what it says in CPU-Z?
-
Then the company that carries these chips must be posting the wrong info...I should have known this. My last PC I built had a socket 478....sorry, my brain is shot today.
-
Ah so what do you recommend?
-
Depends....why do you THINK you need to upgrade? Gaming? Battery life? Multi tasking?
What do you have now? What OS? ETC.... -
I replaced my Celeron M 520 (1.6ghz) with a T5300 Core 2 Duo Processor (1.73ghz).
Check ebay over there in the UK. Or buy it off our ebay (couldnt tell you how to do that.lol) and have it shipped overseas.
Let me check real fast..... -
Need better performance. I have a Celeron M 540 and Vista Home Premium. The ones on eBay over here are real expensive I think and wouldn't it cost a lot to ship from the US to the UK? Also I do not use PayPal so what payment options does that leave me with if I buy one from the US? What have you found mich?

socket 478 and 479 are not the same
I think cpu-z is slightly off (this is not that uncommon). there is a socket 479, but it was used for older celeron m's, but not the celeron m 540. It uses a socket P. which also has 478 pins, but is pin incompatible with socket m and socket 478.
not sure where to get them in the UK (I live in US) but heres newegg.com's offering of socket P chips so that you know what you are looking for. As you can see they are quite expensive chips in the aftermarket.

if you could find a C2D Txx50 (5450, 5250) it might be cheaper, but probably hard to find (As they are OEM only chips).
The other option is the 2nd poster's suggestion of a pentium dual core T2310, T2330, or T2370, these are also socket p.
heres the wikipedia pages for reference, but I've covered almost everything.

Apparently only the T5xxx and T7xxx CPUs are supported
Is this a good deal? - http://www.ebuyer.com/product/128923
Apparently Socket P is still referred to as Socket 479 even though the actually CPU only has 478 pins explaining why CPU-Z reports Socket 479. -

Cpu-z is off, if it's a 540 and INtel 965 chipset then you're looking at socket P santa rosa chips.
This is Pentium Dual Core T23**, Core 2 Duo T5*50 T5*70 T7*50 and T7X00 where X is 1,3,5,7,8 and 9. -
Ok. Is the price for that T7100 I linked to good?

£90... over a Celeron-M... hard to say. I have no idea if it's a good price for the chip. Whether it's worth £90 for you over the old one is up to you.
-
But wouldn't it be a huge leap up in performance?
-

Looking at it £90 does seem like a pretty good price. You should see a pretty big boost.
-
It might even get further reduced now the Penryns are here. Eventually I'm going to buy a really high end laptop with all the bells and whistles. This is just to keep me going for a year.
-
what are the rest of the specs of your laptop? I ask because you may have a bottleneck somewhere besides the processor. Also, what kinds of tasks are you looking to increase the performance of?
to answer your question, it seems like a good price for the chip. I'm not in the UK so I can't say for certain, but in USD its comparable with our ebay prices best I can tell. -
Hi bookman, what specs are you after? I've taken a gamble and bought a T7100 off eBay:

Tell me what you think man -
OK, here's the moment of the truth the T5250 has arrived. Hopefully the next time I reply it'll be with a T5250 in
-
you bought a 7100 off ebay and a 5250 arrived?
-
No I got a 5250 and guess what, I'm using it now!!! Yes I've done it, it was an absolute slippery slope and unfortunately I'll have to open up the laptop again soon as I only realised when I was about to replace CPU that I'd accidentally thrown away the thermal paste lol. Anyway the important thing is that it works, I'll be posting some pics soon

Here are the first set of pics for ya!
