Hey folks, I plan on upgrading the HDD in my Cowon Q5 PMP to an SSD in the near future. More precisely it has to have a ZIF connector, 1.8" (HxWxD : 8mm x 54mm x 71mm) ~ around there, and at least 60GB.

I browsed through google a bit and ended up looking at the PhotoFast and the RunCore. I don't plan to upgrade until September or so. Any suggestions? Davepermen?

    Cheapest Solution!

well, first of all, solutions at all. then lets talk about cheap :) mtron only delivers up to 32gb sadly. there was a samsung, back in it's days, 64gb zif based. but it performs very badly.

so actual fine performers that you might want? i guess, only photofast or runcore.

there, you normally have jmicron (urgh) or indilinx. obviously, the indilinx are more expensive, but definitely worth it (in the eye of the beholder). but as i can see with the kingston value series, even jmicron might finally be able to get run stutterfree (or mostly).

so, yeah.. those are the options, i guess.. jmicron or indilinx from photofast or runcore. and i think the indilinx aren't even available yet? (photofast v3, that would be. dunno about runcore).

but you're definitely not looking at very cheap ..

Yea I see that they are not very cheap at all. I paid $199 shipped for my Vertex 60GB and i'm seeing these 1.8" SSDs surpassing that price, it's sad. I really just want an SSD for my PMP for their ruggedness (shock resistance), while maintaining good performance as I would be using it in my new Jeep to play my music through. I don't want to hear any skipping while playing tracks.

    Thanks for the reply!

I have a Hard drive based Zune which I used all the time in our Jeep. it never once gave us a problem. now I have a nano, but it keeps losing menu's...

PS what Jeep? we have a Grand Cherokee 3.0L diesel

Yea I might just stick with the HDD that's in it for a while, cuz those 1.8" SSDs are just as bad pricewise as the regular 2.5".

    It's a Jeep Liberty Ltd. 3.7L

PS: I haven't actually tried driving with it but I just thought it would be a good idea. But if I do upgrade it might not be til next year when the price is more reasonable. After all, it's a ZIF connector. Less speed and smaller size. The cheapest one I saw so far was a KingSpec for $183. Which is still too high for my liking.

ZIF is capable of 87MB/s as shown here. No current consumer SSD's 4kb reads, where a lot of the OS spends it's time, comes even close to hitting that mark. Intel X25-M is < 30MB/s. Mtron pips 34MB/s. Can see for yourself here.

See 1.8" ZIF SSD offerings. Best bang-per-buck is just released Runcore ProIV using Indilinx Controller. US$230 for 64GB. Mtron's 4kb reads are faster than Indlinx controllers, yes, that included the SATA OCZ Vertex, but has higher power consumption and pricetag. 64GB version scheduled Q3 2009. Mtron's 32GB version retails for US$239.

I see...I am not looking for speed in this case as I want the SSD for my PMP player; all i'm concerned about is 1) The price (cheapest available), 2) No stuttering issues during music/video playback and 3) must be at least 64GB. At this time the current lineups are too expensive for this genre of SSDs. So i'm just going to wait until the prices comes down on the 1.8" ZIF SSDs.
