Can somebody tell me how to check the firmware of my Crucial M4 256GB?

I didn't update it myself, but I'm not sure what firmware the drive came with.

Are you running Windows on the drive already? If so, you can use CrystalDiskInfo to check the firmware version.

Otherwise, the original firmware might be written on the drive or box.

The safest (meaning there will be no ambiguity) way is to download the latest Firmware update ISO and go through the first few steps of updating it - it should tell you what SSD(s) are in the system and what their Firmware level is.

The best part is that if you need to update it - you're now ready to do it. ;)

    Good luck.

Are you running the drive on a SATA 3Gb/s port or a SATA 6Gb/s port?

OP, another way of checking fw ver is by going to 'Device Manager' via Control Panel. Expand 'Disk drives', and double click the SSD drive to open its Properties.

Under the Details tab select 'Hardware Ids' from the Property section. See attached.
