    Greetings, help me decide.

    Why dell? — because i heard those 3 are good for what they cost.
    I do some graphic design at home (mostly at work but still) so i want ips only, also some gaming (i am fine with 8ms or whatever) and some other random stuff like surfing.

    27 inch u2711 s-ips — $775 — looks tempting and i always wanted a BIG monitor. However its little bit expensive, the resolution is huge for the physical size and granted that i dont have best eyesight i am worried that things might seem too smal and i will need to increase fonts etc. Also i will use it with my notebook and i guess modern games will be a huge NO on such a resolution with my gpu. 2560x1440 0,233mm

    24 inch U2410 h-ips — $546 — good monitor all around however it looks a bit too expensive compared to its 23 inch brother. 1920х1200 0,270mm

    23 inch U2311 e-ips — $270 — that baby cost almost nothing compared to bigger brothers and that alone make me want to buy it right now. 23 would be fine i guess and i will be able to even launch some games on it granted resolution isnt huge, i am just not sure how bad e-ips is compared to h- and s-ips. 1920x1080 0,265

    What do you guys think?

    I think my maths is right:

    15 inch 16:9

    A^2 + B^2 = 225

    16A = 9B

    A^2 + 9/16A^2 = 225

    25A^2 = 3600

    A^2 = 144

    A = 12"

    27 inch 16:9

    A^2 + B^2 = 729

    25A^2 = 11664

    A^2 = 466.56

    A = 21.6"

    12" = 1440 pixels = 120 pixels/inch
    21.6" = 2560 pixels = 118.52 pixels/inch

    Therefore the 27" inch screen is very similar in pixel density to your macbook. A little lower (so a little larger the image would be).

    Gaming has bigger issue with IPS... input lag. It's like constant 50-70ms ping even in offline gaming. AFIK some IPS monitors have some build-in profiles to lower input lag in exchange for color quality, so you may want to check this for Dell monitors.

    My 15 inch mbp got 1440px in width.
    I didnt buy 1600 screen on purpose )
    Also you dont need to do any crazy calculations to realize that normal 24 inch monitor has 0,270mm and that one 27 incher got 0,23 which transfers into almost 15% "smaller" everything.

    Well, i used to play on ips so i guess it wont be a problem. but thx for warning.

    I was saying that assuming you had the 1440 screen then per inch the 27 inch monitor has the same number of pixels. So imagine a big version of you macbook screen.

    If you budget allows it, go for the u2711. I've been using it before about 8 months after getting it for 752$ on special in Canada where I live. I'd never owned an IPS monitor let alone a monitor larger than 23". You will not be disappointed. You will appreciate the larger screen in contrast to your 17" MBP.

    The Dell U2410's have been down to $440 on various sale in Canada. Very nice screen (just got mine today as a warranty replacement on a 2408WFP -- a drastic improvement in text quality, thats for sure).

    Just wondering what you all do with old monitors that need to be replaced but are skill kind of good? I have a 2407WFP I need to upgrade and has a few burn in problems I can't seem to fix. I called up Dell and they wouldn't let me send it in for repair or use as credit for an upgrade.

    Craiglist? Ebay? Kijiji? Keep it and put it on a computer that's not used as often? Donate to a worthy cause? Give it to a relative who is still suffering on a CRT?

    Remember the old days when 21" CRTs were $2400 a pop, could induce back injury if not carefully handled, used 300-400W of electricity, were sensitive to magnetic fields, and only maintained their brightness for a couple years at best? :eek:

    What kind of improvements did you see? Was the text less fuzzy? Easier to read? Something else?

    Relative to all the mainstream TN monitors out there, the 2408WFP is already pretty high end so I'm very curious :)

    Ah i see. Well, i am usually sticking my nose into the screen when i am working on my mbp screen in contrast to sitting at least 1 meter away from external monitor so that makes me hesitate i guess. And my another concern is still there — how will huge resolution work out with modest notebook gpu in anything else thats not browsing.

    I live in ukraine and our re-sellers here seem to be a bit greedy.
    Anyway, even $440 is almost twice more then 23 inch model.
    Anyone had a chance to compare those? (23 vs 24)
