I am wishing to convert my wife's dell inspiron 5000e hard drive (travelstar djsa-232 32 gb ata/ide) hard drive to a sshd in the 60-80 gb range. what sshd would you recommend

Not really worth it, to be honest with you.
are you asking about an SSD (solid state) or an HDD?
Since you are on the old PATA interface, your options are somewhat more limited. -
Another worthwhile present might be a RAM upgrade or perhaps a webcam, if she has use for one and the Inspiron doesn't have one built-in.
-
Solid state hard drive. I already increased her ram to the max. I cant get rid of the computer as it was a gift from her deceased mother and it has sentimental value, hence why the change in hard drives to try and increase the performance and to reduce the heat increasing life span

To decrease the heat, try undervolting.

thinkpad knows best Notebook Deity
Blast out the heatsink by taking it out and using an air compressor (very carefully), scrape old thermal compound from CPU and apply fresh compound to CPU as well as GPU if it's a discrete GPU, try undervolting the GPU by using a BIOS mod program, VoltageTuner is a good one, i think it is real time voltage control however. HDD shouldn't be responsible for THAT much heat in a laptop.
-
Voltage Tuner appears to be designed for high-end desktop Nvidia GPUs.
-
The change in hard drives is also to accommodate more files. so I am really interested in which solid state hard drive anyone recommends that is ATA/IDE for a laptop
-
There aren't very many PATA SSD's to choose from. This is the one I would choose if given the choice

Unfortunately on backorder -
PATA SSD's are not worth there price in gold.
-
agreed... just buy her a new PATA hard drive...
