What is the best way to update the BIOS on my Clevo P650RA laptop?

I cannot find anything official that will help me, and everything I can find for my BIOS looks sketchy as anything.

    Thanks

Why would you need to update your BIOS?

Because I've just installed a new display and it's not working properly. When I emailed the company that sold me the display they said it's likely to be a BIOS issue and needs to be updated.

Doesn't sound like a BIOS update issue

The display seems to work fine in 1080p60, and it works most of the time in 1080p 144Hz. However, sometimes something happens and the display seems to lose sync or the refresh rate seems to completely get corrupted and the screen. It ends up looking like this

And sometimes I get the same issue when trying to enter the BIOS setup. It looks like this

If I reset the laptop and reboot into Windows then the display is fine from the BIOS startup and info screen and until the point it gets to the desktop at which point it then corrupts. If I set it back to 1080p60 then the fault clears in Windows straight away.

The seller of this display says that a BIOS update usually fixes this type of issue. My BIOS version is from 2015 so I think it's worth trying. The only other thing it could be is that either my internal graphics card cannot handle the 144Hz refresh rate, or the connector doesn't have enough bandwidth for 144Hz. My graphics card is an Intel HD 530, and the display connector is an EDP 30 pin.

The first 24 hours after I installed the new display it worked fine, I even played a game in 144fps and it was awesome. This issue started when Windows updated to v1903 and the corrupt display started as Windows was at 79% of the update. Could just be a coincidence and the fault was already present but I hadn't trigger it yet. And if it is a Windows issue then why do I sometimes get the same issue in the BIOS setup screen?

Any idea how to get the latest BIOS firmware for a Clevo P650RA? It seems this would be the easiest way to attempt to fix this.

The fact that it is ok till it hits the desktop suggests to me that this is a video driver problem. You can download the Intel Driver and Support assistant, and it will check all of your intel drivers, including the video driver. I happen to have the Intel 530 (on my 6700HQ. The current driver is 26.20.100.6912, dated May 28, 2019. It's ok to pursue updating the bios as well - your current bios is an AMI 2.17.1254 (from your screen), and you may be able to find an update by searching. Even better would be to check the Clevo site - they should be able to provide the most recent bios.
    Good luck,

    Joe

Thanks for the reply. I agree that it seems to be a Windows driver issue, but then why does the glitch also happen on the BIOS setup screen??

I will try the Intel update assistant first.

Is this the BIOS updates I can use? http://repo.palkeo.com/clevo-mirror/P6xxRx/

My system is a P650RA, my current BIOS version is 1.05.07 which matches the date shown there too.

    Thanks again.

So the update assistant is now updating the internal GPU driver. The info it gives for the device is

    • Refresh Rate - Current 60 Hz
    • Refresh Rate - Maximum 143 Hz
So my display should be able to run ok. But could the issue be that it is trying to run at 144Hz instead of 143Hz and this is causing the display to lose sync, or whatever it's doing?

Did you make absolutely certain that the display cable is securely connected to your motherboard? Perhaps something is slightly loose or not making good contact, which could cause glitches outside of the operating system.

    SO updated the Intel GPU driver and the glitch remains. If I set Windows to 144Hz then the screen then this happens until it reverts to 60Hz again;

Wait for someone with a p650 here to answer. I suggest try working with intel drivers again and try setting it to 144 either with that or nvidia, or some combo of both. Try disabling optimus as well.

I took the display out again and removed the EDP connector to make sure it is re-seated properly. That is one of the strangest connections I've ever seen!

So far everything seems OK and I cannot force my display to glitch by doing the same things that used to cause it before, so hopefully this was the issue. It's strange that the monitor only glitched in 144Hz mode and never in 60Hz mode if the cause wasn't connected properly.

Just in case I need to update the BIOS later, can I use these BIOS updates?

    http://repo.palkeo.com/clevo-mirror/P6xxRx/

Or is there an official Clevo site with the BIOS updates?

    Thanks.
