    Hi all, new here.

So my 3 year old clevo's M8800 GTX is pretty much dying on me, since a couple months now gaming is out of the question and even video performance is poor. Of course the warranty has run out, so I even baked the damn GPU already once, wich helped for a couple of weeks. But now the GPU is unstable as ever. Emailed the manufacturer of the laptop for a replacement GPU: 680€! As if I'm paying half of the laptops initial price for a now 3 year old GPU. Did some research, found out a M9800GT should fit the chassis and according to the manufacturer even the Motherboard should support it. Bought a cheap M 9800 GT from China via alibaba (labeled "for ASUS"), but hey its essentially the same card as before, just rebadged, right? So it could/should work? Updated the BIOS and all but all I get with the new GPU is some 30secs of runtime accompanied with relentless beepings. The picture is fine and all; so im guessing its just that the GPU is hardcoded or something to work only with ASUS laptops?

What I'm asking/hoping for is if its somehow possible to trick either the motherboard/bios/GPU to work with the new setup. Or is that just wishful thinking? The new GPU seems to be in pristine condition by the looks of it.

If not, I have a M570RU with a semi-working M8800 GTX, T9300 CPU, Wifi, 4GB of RAM and a Full HD screen for sale...

Dump the vbios from the 8800m GTX, flash that vbios onto the 9800M GT.

They are the same GPU so the vbios will work.
    That should stop the beeping.

Thanks for the help! While attempting to reflash the vbios of the supposed 9800M GT, it turned out the card is actually a 9800M GS.... *sigh* Trying to get a refund from the weasel of a seller.

Yeah, I i like to know my hardware all the time. The Sellers probably wasn't a a weasel just someone who didn't know and was ignorant or didn't think details mattered. You have to be very careful about mobile cards on ebay they are always miss described or represented. "This here is an mxm III hd4850", NO HOLE IT ISN'T! It is an MXM 3.0. The problem is with computers especially laptops know one knows what they are selling or the consequences of miss representing said hardware. I guess that was more of rant huh?

I'm not sure what version of mxm your laptop has,

    MXM technical before 3.0

    MXM technical v3.0

Seeing as the GPU you just got was the wrong one, perhaps we can help you find another more powerful GPU.

I thank you for your help. My laptop uses the HE connector and i know a 9800m GT / 8800m GTX will fit, as will a 8700M GT and a 9800M GTS, but I really don't want to consider the latter two because of the lesser performance. On the other hand I really don't want to dish out obscene ammounts of money for a GPU that is notoriously badly build and prone to breakdowns (8800M GTX/9800M GT), especially for any used ebay unit. So if you have any tips where to find a decent, equally performing replacement for my gpu, I'm all ears.

You can also try the FX3700m or the GTX260m/280m. They should work.
