Alrighty, so as a gift to my younger brother, I've come into contact with a deal for a barebones machine of the model above and I'll be building him this machine for his birthday this year come September. It's BNIB too. :D

He's got nothing to play on except a crappy computer that's like 5 years old and I remember being in that position at one time too... So I'm being a good big brother. (He'll be 11 this year and I'll be 24)

It's this exact model: eBay - New & used electronics, cars, apparel, collectibles, sporting goods & more at low prices

I offered $350+shipping because of the rise of the new laptops out there and he accepted to hold one for me. ^_^

The guy said it comes with the CPU and GPU heatsinks. It's always been a dream of mine to try and grab an older machine and bring it up to spec, plus my brother doesn't need anything too flashy. ;) I figure a 9800M GT, 4GB DDR2, T9800 CPU, 320GB Raid0/Win 7 laptop should do nicely for him.

I would like to know the socket that the computer can handle, GPU wise, and if the CPU would be better off being a PXX00 rather than the TXX00.

Is this feasible if I can haggle down prices sufficiently to a total cost of around say.... $700?

P.S. I know that I can get a better machine for a similar price, in terms of performance, but I can fool my parents and say I just haggled the price of this amazing machine down to like $300 and it's a refurbished machine or something. :p

Well i think it is a bad idea. You have no warranty, all new technology is better and the 9800GT Nvidias have not a very reliable reputation.
The only thing good is the screen if it lasts...

Provided it came with enough, I might get it... If I got the GPU with it the whole deal would be over a thousand and that's just too much. It's a fantastic deal, yes, but it's too much in the end.

Get an fx3600m for $100 on eBay.
Q9200 for $110 (I think it should work but may depend on Motherboard/bios revision).
    And you'll be set.

But I would maybe start a wtb thread in the marketplace to see if you can get anything better.
