Well, I just purchased an MXM 980M upgrade and the seller put on a new bios he was sure would work for my laptop. A little research and I realized that the issue is the non G-Sync version of the 980M. I'm not going the route of flashing my Clevo MB to take off Gsync, so I was hoping someone might have a vbios used for this purpose I could flash to the GTX 980M. I've searched all I can online and the seller has offered to return the card, but figured I'd check in here before abandoning hope. I got an amazing deal on it and I'd hate to spend an extra $150-200 for a Gsync model or even more to jump up to a 1060 that may have the same issue.

unfortunately, a mere vbios flash will not solve that issue. u need a G-Sync hardware revision GPU.

Just curious then how people have been able to get GTX 1060s to run, as I was under the impression they faced the same issue.

i think with pascal gpus its different in that all gpus support both gsync and non-gsync setups. with maxwell there were two revisions of each gpu, one gsync and one without. this was mirrored in both the vbios used as well as the hardware ID and a hardware component on the card itself.

i might be wrong, but this is basically how i remember it :)

Thanks for giving me more clarity. If that’s the case, I think I’ll return this card and make the jump to a GTX 1060, as I found a few of those much lower than I expected. While it’s clear about how to change the vbios on those (and it appears I don’t need to), I know that card requires some driver modification. Is there a good how-to for the pascal cards? New arena for me.

the 1060 will also give you a nice bump in performance over the 980M at lower wattage and most likely temps :) its anywhere in the range of 10-35% faster than the 980M depending on the application used.

as for driver inf mods, best to consult google ;)

I was doing that just as you typed, and it looks like I found a solid beginners thread:

    http://null-bin.blogspot.com/2015/08/how-to-modify-nvidia-notebook-driver.html

What I'm really looking forward to is VR on the go, hence the urge to move to Pascal. I have a GTX 1080 system in an open room so I just upgraded to a Vive Pro. I just ordered a travel case for my old Vive and a single lighthouse to go with it, so I can play some seated (I'm a long standing Elite :Dangerous player) or forward facing games when I travel; I will probably be working on an oil rig 2 weeks on, 2 weeks off starting in June and having my Vive along for the ride would really help pass the time!
