Hey
I got an FE11S two days ago and this morning I heard a clicking sound that started for no apperent reason and would happen every 30 seconds roughly - it happened 5 or 6 times then I restarted the laptop (as I was trying to sleep and clicking noises are annoying in that situation!).
I has not occured since then, although before it started it had been on for about 14 hours (plugged in of course!).
I am guessing the harddrive and processor are at the front of the laptop as that is where the most heat is and where it sounds like the harddrive is when I can hear it, but this sound was coming from the back near the battery or speakers.
It may have been from the speakers themselves but it could have been from something else (although the speakers were muted on the laptop when it happened).
I phoned Sony and they said if it happens again let them know which I will so what could it be? any ideas? I hope it is just a one off dodgy PC momment as I would hate to have a serious problem on a new laptop! By the way everything is and was working perfectly there is no obvious problem with anything the PC is doing just that clicking sound which happened for a few mins before I restarted it.

It's 100% the hard drive.
If it clicks randomly at intervals, it's usually fine, but if its constant, back it up ASAP, it sounds like it will die soon! -
It didn't sound like it was coming from the hard drive - I put my ear to where I thought the hard drive is and I couldn't hear anything strange. Also at the time the laptop was not doing anything in particular.
Also something I forgot to mention I have been having some sound issues when I press the mute button it doesn't always mute or unmute and sometimes I don't get sound when I should - That doesnt bother me too much as it sorts itself out but it makes me think it may have been something to do with the speakers?
But assuming it is the hard drive is occasional clicking not something to worry about? and if so why is it not something to worry about? Surely a brand new laptop should not have a damaged HD? which is what it must be to be clicking right?
I can still return it to the retailer and get a replacement if thats the best solution so please let me know. Thanks. -
if it is indeed your hard drive (not much else has moving parts on a notebook that could possibly produce a 'clicking' noise); check your BIOS for 'acoustic' settings for the drive. something along the lines of "performance" versus "quiet / silent" mode.
Clicking Sound From FE11S? what is it?
